South African Film Festival

South African Film Festival SAFF Canada & USA showcases quality South African films & documentaries, with proceeds going to education projects.

The South African Film Festival (SAFF) Canada is a non-profit event organized entirely by volunteers. All proceeds go to support the important educational development work Education without Borders has been doing in South Africa since 2002. SAFF presents contemporary documentary and feature films that explore the culture, history and politics of South Africa — films that entertain and inform and show the new face of South Africa.

The South African Film Festival is proud to be a community partner for an open field, directed by Teboho Edkins, screening as part of Shorts Program 1: First Crops at the DOXA Documentary Film Festival.

📍 Join us in watching this powerful documentary at this Canadian premiere on Sunday, May 3rd at 3:15 PM at The Cinematheque in Vancouver.

In the wake of the 2019 Boeing 737 MAX crash that claimed 157 lives—including the filmmaker’s younger brother—Edkins and his father travel to Ethiopia in search of something tangible in their grief. What they encounter is a deeply human approach to mourning, offering a powerful reflection on loss, memory, and cultural connection.

Huge gratitude to Moyo Rainos Mutamba, Adrienne Amato, our partners, and the team at the South African Film Festival for making this night possible.
