Another lovely fall day! We added fencing around the 18 school trees we planted this year to keep errant soccer balls, bikes, and our greatest nemesis - riding lawnmowers, away from them!

We had a great question from a Fall ReLeaf customer about prepping your newly planted tree for winter. Here is some advice from our arborist:

- Keep watering the area around the tree weekly for another couple of weeks, but not after the ground has frozen.

- It would be great to put a 2 to 4-inch-deep mulch ring (preferably natural wood mulch) around the root ball and surrounding soil as that holds moisture and helps regulate temperature. (Don’t put mulch directly against the trunk, though.)

- Bunnies and other critters can be an issue in some parts of the city. You can make a fence using hardware cloth and some sticks that will help keep them at bay.

There's a Canadian Press wire story that has appeared in the Free Press, on CBC Manitoba, and likely other publications, that mistakenly refers to Trees Winnipeg as the group that is encouraging candidates in the upcoming civic election to sign a tree protection pledge.

To give credit where credit is due, this fine work is being done by Trees Please Winnipeg, a separate group with a similar name to ours. You can read more about their "Save the Shade" campaign here: https://treespleasewinnipeg.com/

We thought we were done for the season, but had a chance to squeeze in a final tree planting at Elmwood Cemetery. These three trees were left over from our ReLeaf sale.

This beautiful space has lost several mature trees in the past couple of years due to disease and old age. We spoke about coming back next year to do a community tree planting with larger trees in tow.

Stay tuned for details!
