Amnesty International at York (AIY) We're an official branch of Amnesty International Canada run completely by volunteer students at York University

The purpose of AIY is to increase awareness of Amnesty International's work by taking action and stopping grave abuses of our rights to physical and mental integrity; freedom of conscience, expression and discrimination by promoting awareness, coordinating events and engaging in fundraising activities on campus. We provide a space for all those who want to promote human rights, and engage and empower those whose rights are unfulfilled. It is our hope to raise awareness in the York University community on human rights issues so that others may be inspired to take action. THE MOVEMENT:

Members' activism around the world is channeled through national sections, international networks and affiliated networks. Supporters and staff mobilize persistent pressure on governments, armed political groups, companies and others to prevent and stop these violations. We campaign to bring justice and dignity to every person, free prisoners of conscience, ensure fair trials, protect refugees, abolish the death penalty, curtail "disappearances" and torture, among other initiatives. We are independent of all governments, political persuasions, and religious creeds. The charter is financed by our members and donors, and no funds are sought or accepted from governments.

Today marks a day of mourning and collective grief for Palestinians, both in Palestine and throughout the global diaspora, whose loved ones have been lost or killed as a result of the unprecedented levels of violence which the Israeli regime began to perpetrate against Palestinian’s in its latest onslaught of systemic aggression and injustice.

Earlier today, members of Amnesty International at York stood in solidarity yorku’s Vigil For Palestine, and gathered with many members of the York University community, to pay tribute through poetry, art, speakers and collective grief.

As we engaged in collective reflection on the latest onslaught of Israel’s colonial aggression on the homes of Palestinian people, the unlawful violence carried about by the IDF, and it’s cruel system of apartheid, which has created a devastating humanitarian crisis.

While we reflect on this present moment, we are also reminded of Israel’s long-standing human rights abuses not only of Palestinians, but also toward the people of Lebanon, where Israel launched a ground invasion, that resulted in the death of more than 2,000 people whilst displacing approximately 1 million people in only 3 weeks, through carpet-bombing in Beirut.

One year on, we reaffirm our demands from justice and accountability from the respective authorities at national levels, and those within the international community, so as to ensure the protection of all civilians, and to guarantee the right to live freely and safely for everyone.

Humanity must prevail.

Earlier today, Amnesty International at York members, alongside other students from the York contingent, joined thousands of people to march in the streets of Tkaronto (Toronto) and stand in solidarity with Grassy Narrows and the people of Asubpeeschoseewagong First Nation.

For over 50 years, three generations of community members have been living with, and still continue to live with, mercury poisoning due to industrial pollution into their traditional lands and waterways.

Mercury poisoning can severely impact the nervous system, causing blindness, memory problems, walking issues and tremors. Exposure during pregnancy can cause brain damage in babies.

It is shameful that they have endured decades of, and still continue to endure industrial poisoning.

Members of Grassy Narrows marched directly to Queen's Park to speak to members of the Ontario government. It is also the responsibility of the federal government to ensure that treaty rights are upheld and that Grassy Narrows traditions are safeguarded.

The time is now to demand an end to all industrial threats that harm Grassy Narrows - this means no logging, no mining and no nuclear waste.

There must also be compensation for mercury poisoning survivors, as well as the provision of adequate healthcare, including mental health services. This must be extended to the entire community, including their families, friends and loved ones.

We cannot continue to ignore the plight of the Asubpeeschoseewagong First Nation and Grassy Narrows - they deserve justice and sovereignty now.

We call upon both the provincial and federal governments to commit to act quickly and decisively to end this continued injustices.

Shut down the Dryden Mill. Justice for Grassy Narrows. Justice for the Asubpeeschoseewagong First Nation.

Thank you to everyone, including, but not limited to, students, staff, faculty, alumni and community members, who displayed support by sharing about the family on social media and took time to email and/or call your MP, as well as Immigration Minister Marc Miller.

Because of your support, the family was granted Temporary Resident Permits, which allows the Lindo family to stay in Canada for a year.

Although we are glad that the Lindo family is safe, the Lindos' case is unfortunately not one that is unique. Numerous people, including individuals and families, are quickly deported from Canada to life-threatening circumstances, often resulting in their death.

The Lindos should have never been in this situation in the first place, and nor should anyone else be either. The family would not have had to endure fears of deportation if they were granted status when they first arrived.

Canada must grant status to everyone who leaves their homes and comes here in search of a safer, better life.

No matter when or where, seeking asylum is a human right. Always.

Tamarri is now in the top three for the qualifiers. We cannot left the Canadian government destroy this young man’s hopes and dreams. We cannot put the family’s life in jeopardy.

Hope everyone had a safe and strong this past June - while there is much to celebrate, there is still so much more to fight for!

Earlier today, members of Amnesty International at York marched in solidarity with 2SLGBTQIA+ members at Abolitionist Pride: From Tkaronto to Palestine And Beyond, organized by .

As we celebrate, we also acknowledge the beginnings of Pride, marked by the Stonewall riots, and continue to fight for members of the 2SLGBTQIA+ community, especially those who are Black, Indigenous, Two-Spirit, Indigiqueer, racialised qu**rs, and trans people - here in Turtle Island (North America), Palestine, Sudan, the Congo, and everywhere else in the world, who continue to continue to struggle and fight for their human rights.

Here at AIY, we will never stop fighting for everyone's right to love openly and safely, and we will always continue to stand up for the rights of all 2SLGBTQIA+ members!
❤️🧡💛💚💙💜

Today, and every day, 2SLGBTQIA+ rights are human rights - everywhere! ✊️✊🏻✊🏼✊🏽✊🏾✊🏿
