On Friday night, Ucluelet Fire Rescue members responded to a residential structure fire in our community. Our sincerest condolences to those who were impacted and displaced.

Thanks to the quick actions of responding crews, the fire was contained and prevented from spreading further. Incidents like these are a strong reminder of the professionalism, teamwork, and training that our members bring to every call, day or night.

We would also like to thank our mutual aid partners from Tofino Volunteer Fire Department for their support during the incident, as well as BC Emergency Support Services and the Canadian Red Cross for assisting those affected.

Most importantly, everyone made it out safely.

Well done to all involved.

Last night, we recognized several members of our department for their actions during a critical rescue incident on April 1, 2026 โ€” actions that directly resulted in a life being saved.

In a moment where training, teamwork, and composure mattered most, these firefighters rose to the occasion and demonstrated exactly why we dedicate ourselves to this profession.

After learning that our crew used their extrication equipment during the rescue, honoured our members with the prestigious โ€œGold Pin Awardโ€ in recognition of their life-saving efforts.

We are incredibly proud of our firefighters and deeply grateful for their commitment to protecting our community. Their actions serve as a powerful reminder of what it means to answer the call when it matters most.

Dear Residents,

As required by National Fire Protection Association standards, all fire hoses in active service must undergo annual pressure testing.

This year the Fire Department is hoping to test their hoses at the end of Marine Drive near Forbes Road at the following times:

Tuesday, May 12 โ€“ 7:00 PM to 9:00 PM
Tuesday, May 19 โ€“ 7:00 PM to 9:00 PM (anticipated final testing night)
Tuesday, May 26 โ€“ 7:00 PM to 9:00 PM (held as a contingency date if additional testing is required)

Hose testing differs somewhat from normal training operations, as we do not flow significant amounts of water. There is the potential for nearby residents to experience some temporary water discolouration during the filling process due to mineral sediment.

For any questions please contact:
Ucluelet Fire Rescue at 250-726-7744 or [email protected]. Thank you for your understanding.

๐Ÿ”ฅ Coastal Fire Ban โ€“ Effective May 7 at 12:00 PM ๐Ÿ”ฅ

The BC Wildfire Service has announced that a full open fire prohibition will take effect across the Coastal Fire Centre beginning Thursday, May 7 at 12:00 PM (noon).

This means that Category 1 (campfires), Category 2, and Category 3 open fires will be prohibited throughout our region due to elevated fire danger caused by ongoing warm and dry conditions.

Also prohibited are the activities listed below (Wildfire Act, Section 12):
- Fireworks; as defined in the Fireworks Act;
- Binary exploding targets;
- Sky Lanterns
- Wood-fired hot tubs, wood-fired pizza ovens and other wood-fired devices unless vented through a structure that has a flue and is incorporated in a building;
- Burn barrels or burn cages of any size or description;
- Controlled air incinerators
- Air curtain burners; and
- Carbonizers.

This prohibition does not include the use of outdoor stoves. Under the Wildfire Regulation, an outdoor stove is a CSA-rated or ULC-rated device used outdoors for cooking, heat, or ambiance that burns charcoal briquettes, liquid fuel, or gaseous fuel, and has a flame height of less than 15 cm.

These measures are being taken to reduce the risk of human-caused wildfires associated with open burning activities.

This prohibition will remain in place until October 31, 2026, or until it is rescinded.

Weโ€™re asking all residents and visitors to:
- Respect the ban and avoid all open burning.
- Use extreme caution with any ignition sources.
- Report any signs of wildfire immediately by calling 1-800-663-5555 or *5555 from a cell.

We have had a particularly busy week with some very serious rescue calls. Our hearts go out to all the families affected by these recent incidents. As a fire service provider, this is what we train for. Nothing can prepare you for some of the things our firefighters have seen in the last week though. We are fortunate to have such a dedicated team of great people. This team supports each other in good times and when the going gets tough. Thank you team.

Itโ€™s that time of year again for our annual SCBA mask fit testing. Firefighter safety is our top priority. We are fortunate that our firefighters also buy into this concept.

As a reminder, there is a prolonged Atmospheric River event expected from Sunday morning to Wednesday morning.

Prolonged heavy rain on snow combined with mountain snow melt will lead to very enhanced responses in river systems and potential for flooding. Extensive water pooling on roads and wash-outs may occur. There is an enhanced risk of landslides due to saturation of landscapes.

An atmospheric river will begin to make landfall over the BC coast on Sunday and will remain over the region until Wednesday bringing heavy rain. The rain could be mixed with snow on Sunday as the freezing levels will initially lower to near sea level, but the freezing levels will quickly rise on Sunday night and reach 2500 to 3000 metres on Monday morning. The heaviest rainfall is expected on Monday and Tuesday.

Although there is still uncertainty regarding rainfall amounts associated with this atmospheric river, total rainfall amounts could reach 200 to 300 mm for West Vancouver Island and could reach 80 to 120 mm for Inland Vancouver Island and North Vancouver Island.

The rain will ease on Wednesday morning.
