🚴‍♀️🚜 Cyclists on Foothills County Rural Roads – Know the Rules
Cyclists are a legal and recognized road user in Foothills County—but riding on rural roads comes with responsibilities to keep yourself and others safe.
✅ Cyclists must:
• Follow all rules of the road, including signs and signals
• Ride as close to the right side of the roadway as practicable when safe
• Ride single file and behave predictably
• Use required safety equipment, including lights when riding in low light
• Wear an approved helmet if under 18 (strongly recommended for all riders)
🚫 Parking & stopping reminders:
• Do not stop or park bicycles on travel lanes, narrow shoulders, ditches, or field access points
• Avoid stopping where sightlines are limited or farm equipment may enter the roadway
• Improper stopping or blocking roadways may result in enforcement action
🚓 Cyclists are subject to traffic laws and enforcement, just like motorists. Riding responsibly helps reduce collisions and keeps rural roads safe for everyone.

❗On Sunday, April 5 at 3:40 p.m., one of our Community Peace Officers stopped a vehicle on Dunbow Road that was moving a little too fast on the way to Easter dinner. The young driver was travelling 135 km/h in an 80 km/h zone while running late to pick up a family member.

⚖️That speed resulted in a Summons to Youth Court. Under Alberta law, driving more than 50 km/h over the posted speed limit comes with a mandatory court appearance, and fines are determined by the courts.

👮 We get it — holidays are busy, dinners are waiting, and nobody likes to be late. But no meal is worth risking yours or someone else’s safety.

⏰Friendly reminder: Dunbow Road is an 80 km/h zone. Take a breath, slow it down, and give yourself a little extra time. Better to arrive late than not arrive safely.
