United Way’s Back 2 School program is helping local students start the year with the backpacks and supplies they need, and there’s still time to help.

Monetary donations are especially helpful right now, allowing the team to purchase exactly what’s still needed.

Donations can be dropped off at the Marigold Centre or Maggie’s Place, or you can make a monetary donation at the link below:

Every donation helps a local student head back to school feeling prepared and ready for the year ahead.

Everyone who joins Search & Rescue has their own reason for saying yes.

For this volunteer, it started with her own reason for wanting to get involved. And like so many members of Colchester Ground Search & Rescue, that decision eventually became a way to show up for people when they need it most.

If you’ve ever wondered what it’s like to be part of Search & Rescue, come meet the team, ask some questions and learn more about getting involved.

Recruitment Event
Saturday, September 12 | 8 a.m.–1 p.m.
Civic Square, Downtown Truro

Good People, Doing Good Things: Claire

When Claire held an art sale back in 2019, selling paintings, painted rocks and beach glass magnets, her family had no idea it would be the beginning of something she’d still be doing years later.

Claire decided to save some of what she made to buy a Christmas gift for a little girl through the Salvation Army Angel Tree. The following year, with COVID impacting charitable donations, she started thinking about how she could help again and decided to hold an outdoor lemonade stand.

She chose the IWK, where she had been for appointments and a few day surgeries over the years, and raised $200 that first year. From there, it just kept growing.

Claire now has her own fundraising platform, Claire Cares, and has raised thousands of dollars for causes that are local or meaningful to her. She’s supported the Alzheimer Society in memory of her grandfather, ALS after losing a cousin, the Truro Elementary Backpack Program and local animal organizations. At Christmas, she also makes ornaments from beach glass she collects all summer and donates the proceeds to her local food bank.

This Saturday, Claire will be back at her grandmother’s home in Bible Hill for her 7th Annual Charity Lemonade Stand, where familiar faces return each year and the Bible Hill Fire Department regularly shows up with a truck and crew.

Lemonade is always by donation, and this year proceeds will support Kids Help Phone and CMHA Colchester East Hants in memory of a dear family friend who passed away in May.

Claire and her family are hoping to make this their biggest year yet, and I think our community can help them do it.

I spent some time with the Colchester Ground Search & Rescue team last week, and one of the things that stood out to me was just how much goes into being part of this organization.

Searches are obviously a big part of what they do, but there’s also ongoing training in navigation, wilderness survival, first aid, rescue techniques and so much more. Members train year-round so they’re ready when a call comes in, whatever that call might look like. In 2025, 75 members gave more than 13,000 hours between searches, training and serving the community.

But every one of those members had to start somewhere. They had to learn the skills, show up for their first training night and figure things out along the way. For someone looking for a way to challenge themselves, learn some pretty incredible skills, meet new people and do something that genuinely matters in their community, Search & Rescue might be worth a closer look.

With recruitment coming up on September 12, we’ll be sharing more over the next few weeks about the people, the training and what it’s actually like to be part of the team. If you’ve ever been even a little curious about Search & Rescue, this might be your year to find out more.

That Dutchman’s Cheese Farm is one of those places that’s worth the drive, no matter your age.

Come for the cheese, wander the nature park, visit the animals, and take your time exploring the property. It’s an easy stop to add to a summer road trip, a day out with friends, or an afternoon spent exploring somewhere new.

And yes, you’ll probably leave with more cheese than you planned.
