The data continues to roll in during the final year of the Living Lab - Nova Scotia project. Our latest research brief highlights the work on water quality at our riparian zone fields being managed by the Clean Annapolis River Project. Research briefs are short, easy-to-digest snapshots of the results from the Living Lab - Nova Scotia project. It's a great way to stay up-to-date with the project and see the impacts of the work. NSFA Office & Online

Registration is now open for the NSFA Annual General Meeting.

Following the approval of bylaw amendments earlier this year, NSFA's fiscal year-end has moved to March 31, resulting in a summer AGM. This meeting will be a focused business session covering the approval of the financial statements, budget, auditor appointment, and annual report. Policies, resolutions, nominations, and related discussions will continue to take place at Farmers' Forum in December.

We recognize that July is one of the busiest times of the year on farm, so we've designed the meeting to be efficient with only covering the necessary business portions and offering the option to attend virtually.

Following the AGM, members attending in person are invited to stay for a complimentary BBQ lunch. This is a great opportunity to slow down and reconnect with fellow farmers during the busy season. We will also be doing door prizes for some great swag!

Whether you join us in person or online, we encourage you to take part in this important business meeting. If you're able to attend in person, we hope you'll take a few hours away from the farm to connect with fellow members, enjoy a local lunch, and recharge with your farming community.

Have you seen these weird little tents in a farm field? Our Living Lab Coordinator Alexandre Loureiro was out at the end of May getting them in place in the wild blueberry fields participating in the Living Lab - Nova Scotia. They are malaise traps and they are used to capture insects. Insects fly under the tent and go up into a bottle of glycol. We then collect these samples all season long and hand them off to our research partner at Cape Breton University.

We're also using them in our riparian zone sites in collaboration with Dalhousie university. The data from the traps will help us understand how our riparian zone and shelterbelt plantings have impacted insect biodiversity and pollinators. To learn more about our riparian and shelterbelt activities check out https://nsfa-fane.ca/riparian-zones-and-shelterbelts/.

As climate volatility, rising production costs, and market uncertainty continue to challenge agriculture, effective Business Risk Management (BRM) programs are more important than ever.

NSFA with funding and support from the Nova Scotia Department of Agriculture, partnered with MNP to undertake an analysis of the perceptions of the BRM suite.

Our policy submission linked below outlines recommendations to improve BRM programs and ensure they better reflect the realities of farming in Nova Scotia. Developed through producer surveys, focus groups, case studies, and industry consultation, the submission highlights key barriers to participation and opportunities to strengthen support for farm businesses.

Today we welcomed MP John Barlow, Shadow Minister for Agriculture and Agri-Food; MP Richard Bragdon, Shadow Minister for Rural Development; MP Dave Epp; and MP Carol Anstey for an industry roundtable session.

NSFA previously met with MP Barlow in Ottawa, where he committed to visiting Nova Scotia to hear directly from farmers and industry leaders. We appreciated the opportunity to follow up on that discussion and co-host a roundtable focused on key issues facing Nova Scotia agriculture.

The conversation covered a number of important topics, including the closure of the Nappan Research Station and the importance of Atlantic agriculture research, producer challenges with the Canadian Food Inspection Agency and the Pesticide Regulatory Directorate (formerly the Pest Management Regulatory Agency), the importance of upcoming trade negotiations to agriculture, and the need to reform Business Risk Management programs to better reflect the realities of farms in Nova Scotia.

We appreciate the MPs taking the time to meet with industry while in Nova Scotia and thank all participants for contributing to a productive discussion.
