Divert NS launched the first annual Community Heroes Bottle Drive Contest in 2024, which encouraged students across the province to take the lead on local recycling efforts.

Schools organized bottle drives in partnership with Enviro-Depots, collecting over 187,000 beverage containers. The initiative raised nearly $15,000 in refunds and prizes for participating schools, all while empowering youth and supporting responsible recycling across Nova Scotia.

In 2023, Divert NS was appointed by the province to oversee Extended Producer Responsibility for packaging and paper products. This shift moves responsibility for curbside recycling from municipalities to the producers who create these materials. In our new role, we monitor performance against diversion targets and ensure producers, processors, and stewardship organizations meet their obligations.

In 2022, we took a major step to reduce our environmental footprint at our Kemptown processing facility. Following a detailed carbon footprint study, we introduced a range of efficiency upgrades, including LED lighting, a high-efficiency HVAC system, electric forklifts, and a ground-mounted solar array that now supplies most of the site’s energy. Together, these changes have reduced greenhouse gas emissions by 77% while lowering operating costs for the long term.

In 2021, Divert NS marked a major milestone in tire recycling, celebrating the recycling of its 25 millionth tire since the program began in 1996.

This achievement reflects decades of progress in keeping scrap tires out of Nova Scotia’s landfills and putting them to better use. In total, the program has diverted more than 190,000 cubic metres of material from disposal and prevented over 55,000 tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions. The milestone highlights the long-term environmental and climate benefits of tire recycling, and the collective impact of Nova Scotians choosing to recycle.

In 2020, Divert NS partnered with municipal solid waste management regions to host 17 Reduce Single-Use Workshops across Nova Scotia, bringing local businesses together to explore practical ways to cut back on single-use items.

Through these sessions, businesses shared their successes, exchanged ideas, and learned simple steps they could take to help customers make more environmentally responsible choices. The initiative reinforced a key message: the best way to manage waste is to prevent it in the first place.

This focus on reduction also carried through Divert NS’ broader education and communications efforts, with advertising and social media campaigns highlighting the impacts of single-use plastics and food waste.

In 2019, Divert NS expanded its recycling efforts with the launch of a province-wide Bicycle Tire Recycling Program, giving Nova Scotians a new way to keep end‑of‑life tires and tubes out of the waste stream.

Through the program, residents can return used bicycle tires and tubes at participating bike shops across the province, with Divert NS covering the cost of collection and recycling. Each year, approximately 4,000 tires and tubes are collected and shipped to a recycling facility in Minto, New Brunswick, where they are transformed into new value‑added rubber products such as cow mats. By making recycling more accessible, the program helps divert additional materials from landfill while supporting practical, circular solutions.
