A family farm is not unlike the living, breathing crops and livestock that are raised on it; it takes balance, care and discipline to keep it healthy.

On Oultonʼs Poultry Farm, nourished by rich soil of the Annapolis Valley and refreshed by the cool salty winds from the nearby Minas Basin, the farm grows through the collaborative and innovative thinking of its caretakers.

For 26 years, Krista and Thom Oulton have built and developed the business ‘from seed,’ so to speak. Now their son Sam is stepping up to keep the business healthy, vibrant and sustainable.

What looks like a routine drive behind farm equipment is something very different in practice.

What you see: a tractor with a slow-moving vehicle sign.
What it means: a vehicle travelling under 40 km/h.

This is your reminder to slow down early, stay patient, and avoid tailgating or following too closely. Operators often cannot see vehicles directly behind them, and unsafe passing decisions create serious risk for everyone on the road.

At 40 km/h, following a slow-moving vehicle for 4 km is only about 6 minutes of your time — a small delay that can make a big difference in keeping everyone safe.

Safety is a two-way street.

You may have heard that cows can contribute to climate change. But did you know they can also help combat it?

By grazing animals on pasture, they can sequester carbon in the soil through their manure. The continuously growing plants in a pasture also add carbon and cover the soil, protecting that carbon from loss. Sequestering carbon is a major way farms can help fight climate change. There are many practices farmers can use to help in the fight against climate change. You can find out more in our blog post at tinyurl.com/meetyourfarmer.

As we roll into the busy farming season, you’ll be seeing more farm equipment on our roads.

While slower speeds can feel frustrating, remember that farmers are out there doing important work—producing quality food and products that we rely on every day and caring for the land for today and for future generations.

At the end of the day, we all share the same goal: getting from Point A to Point B safely.

Over the coming months, we’ll be sharing quick tips through our “What You See vs. What It Means” series to help everyone better understand farm equipment on the road.

🚦 Safety is a two‑way street—and we all have a role to play in making sure everyone gets home safe.
