Kiwanis Club of Trenton Announces Cancellation of 43rd Kiwanis Walleye World Derby.

Trenton, ON – The Kiwanis Club of Trenton regrets to announce that the 43rd Kiwanis Walleye World Fishing Derby, scheduled for May 2026, will not be held. This difficult decision comes after ongoing challenges with declining service club membership and volunteer capacity across the Quinte Region.

For over 40 years, the Derby has been one of Ontario’s largest annual fishing tournaments, attracting thousands of anglers and families to the Bay of Quinte region. In that time, the event has generated millions of dollars, which has been reinvested directly into Quinte West to support local charities, youth programs, food initiatives, seniors’ services, recreation facilities, memorials and community events.

In addition to charitable donations, the Walleye World Derby created a significant economic boost for Quinte West and the surrounding area. Visitors generate tourism dollars and support local jobs. The loss of the 2026 event will be felt not only by non-profits and service groups but also by the wider business community that benefited from the influx of participants and their families.

“The loss of the Derby is not just the loss of a tradition,” said Lisa Kuypers Schroedter, President of the Kiwanis Club of Trenton. “It represents a serious gap in both community funding and local economic development. Service clubs like Kiwanis have always been a mainstay of support, but without strong membership, it becomes increasingly difficult to sustain events of this scale. Without a greater membership base, it is unlikely that the Walleye World Derby can return.”

Service clubs remain vital to the health and future of our community — but they cannot survive without people willing to step forward. Each service club has a different mandate, areas of focus, and traditions. Residents are encouraged to attend a meeting, learn what each club has to offer, and see where their skills and interests best fit.

Whether it’s Kiwanis, Rotary, Lions, or another local group, there is a place for everyone to contribute. By becoming a member, residents help ensure that vital programs, donations, and events continue — and that traditions like the Walleye World Derby may one day return.

The Kiwanis Club of Trenton invites the public to continue celebrating the spirit of the Walleye World Derby by supporting our other local fundraising initiatives and community events. Every contribution helps sustain Kiwanis programs, strengthens local charities, and keeps our community vibrant and thriving.

Founded in 1951, the Kiwanis Club of Trenton is part of Kiwanis International, a global service organization dedicated to improving the lives of children and strengthening communities. Founded over 70 years ago, the club has supported local youth programs, charities, and community projects through fundraising and volunteer service.
