"Growing up, giving back was just something we did. My parents always volunteered and supported charities, especially around Christmas, and that shaped how I see community and generosity today.

It wasn’t until recently that I learned about monthly giving. What stood out to me is how powerful it is: becoming a monthly donor gives charities a steady, predictable source of funding. That stability means they can spend less time worrying about fundraising and more time focused on what really matters. Helping people, supporting families, and creating lasting change.

The Skills Centre has been serving the Trail community since 1997, helping hundreds of people each year, job seekers, youth, older workers, survivors of trauma, newcomers, and families living on low incomes. Through skills training, employment services, bursaries, and poverty reduction programs, they’re helping people build brighter futures.

Right now, many charities are facing increasing demand and financial uncertainty. Monthly donations, even $5, $10, or $25 may seem small, but together they make a real difference. They allow organizations like the Skills Centre to plan ahead, grow their programs, and continue showing up for people who need them most.

If there’s a cause you care about, I encourage you to consider becoming a monthly donor. It’s a simple way to create lasting impact. One small, consistent gift at a time" - Monthly Donor Testimonial

The Skills Centre supports community through employment and skills training, poverty reduction and other programs for equity denied groups.

📣 You still have time to share your ideas!

We’ve had some great input already on the future use of the warehouse but we need more voices at the table!

Here’s what we’re hearing so far:

âś… Strong interest in a community hub or gathering space that brings people together
âś… Ongoing need for services supporting housing, food security, and vulnerable populations
✅ High demand for indoor recreation space (yes… we see you, pickleball players!)
âś… Interest in youth programming, trades training, and family supports
âś… A desire for a space that is welcoming, safe, and accessible for everyone

This decision impacts the whole community and we want to make sure it reflects your priorities too.

If you’ve ever wondered what it’s like to work in trades or industrial jobs, this is your chance to see it up close.

Our Inclusive Futures in Industry & Trades Program is opening the door for girls in grades 10–12, women living with low income, and gender diverse individuals to explore careers that haven’t always felt accessible.

You’ll have the opportunity to job shadow local employers, see the work firsthand, and share your honest experience afterward. Each job shadow comes with a $100 honorarium, and we can also help with transportation, snacks, or childcare if needed.

Whether you’re in Trail, Castlegar, Nelson, or nearby communities, this is your chance to step into something new and shape what your future could look like.
Reach out if you’re ready to learn, explore, and make connections that matter.

When the Skills Centre purchased our office building in 2022, also included was a three-storey high warehouse. It's previously been used as a dance studio, exercise facility, bingo hall, and an armoury. There's a lot of potential, so we are inviting community members, organizations, service providers, and partners to participate in consultations focused on the future use of the warehouse.

Participating in the survey will help us identify:
âś…unmet needs in our community
âś…explore potential uses for the space
✅inform future planning and decision‑making

We welcome participation from nonprofits, businesses, public sector partners, government, community members and residents across the Trail and Kootenay region.
