For more than six decades, the Trail Gymnastics Club has quietly helped generations of local children learn how to tumble, flip and fly, and this year, the long-running community club is seeing one of its strongest seasons yet.

With 422 registered members, including 15 coaches and six volunteer board members, the club continues to thrive as one of Trail’s enduring grassroots sports organizations while sending athletes to competitions across British Columbia.

The club’s 33-member competitive team, made up of gymnasts between the ages of eight and 18, has spent the season competing in Women’s Artistic Gymnastics events around the province, including the Women’s Artistic Championships in North Surrey, the Xcel Championships in Maple Ridge and the Grizzly Classic in Kelowna.

One more competition remains on the calendar this season, with athletes set to compete in Fernie from May 30 to June 1.

For the club, however, success is measured by far more than medals.

“It is fun to watch the gymnasts’ confidence improve throughout the season as they learn to perform and compete under pressure,” office administrator and coach Katy Dunsmore said.

Dunsmore noted that many of the club’s Xcel Gold gymnasts achieved significant milestones this season, including mastering new skills and floor routines as they work toward advancing into the Xcel Platinum level.

“This was the first year that we have sent girls to the Xcel Championships and they all did so well,” she said. “All the girls have been working on consistency and getting their full start values, and we have seen improvement across the teams.”

The club also celebrated having a CCP Level 7 gymnast represent Zone 1 at the 2026 BC Winter Games.

While the current season reflects a strong year competitively, the story behind the Trail Gymnastics Club stretches back much further.

Physical literacy is defined as having the skills, confidence and motivation to enjoy a variety of sports in various environments that will benefit the healthy development of the whole person. By the nature of the sport, gymnastics develops physical literacy in its participants, helping them to learn fundamental movement patterns and thus a “movement vocabulary”. Just like learning to read, write, and do math, movement patterns are learned physical skills which develop over time. By participating in gymnastics every week, your child is increasing their movement vocabulary and learning skills that they will carry with them, enabling them to be active for life.
