Thrilled to feature 2024 EFC Scholar Joshua Bierbrier - My name is Josh Bierbrier, and I am a graduating medical student at Queen’s University. I was incredibly fortunate to be selected as an Eye Foundation of Canada Scholar in 2024, where I completed eight weeks of clinical rotations across several ophthalmology clinics in Toronto.

This experience gave me early exposure to ophthalmology in a way that would not otherwise have been possible. Learning from world-renowned ophthalmologists helped me develop my clinical acumen, strengthen my hands-on examination skills, and gain invaluable experience through direct patient encounters. I was also fortunate to observe in the operating room and shadow surgeons performing ophthalmic procedures. In addition, the program opened doors to research opportunities that I was able to pursue.

Most importantly, the EFC introduced me to an incredible network of mentors and past scholars whose guidance and support helped shape my path to ophthalmology. My summer scholarship experience solidified my interest in pursuing ophthalmology as a career.

I am excited to begin my ophthalmology residency at the University of Toronto this summer, and I am deeply grateful to Dr. Arshinoff, the Eye Foundation team, and all of the mentors who helped make this journey possible.
