Every successful journey carries the fingerprints of people who believed in us along the way.

This short reflection is about one such person in my lifeβ€”a leader who recognized my potential early in my career and supported me in pursuing the next stage of my education.

Looking back, I am reminded that mentorship is not only about advice. Sometimes it is about opening doors, creating opportunities, and helping someone become who they were meant to be.

Take a moment to reflect:
Who helped change the trajectory of your life?

πŸŽ₯ Sankofa Speaks β€” Episode 10 | SERIES FINALE
"You Were Always Building Something"

After ten episodes together, we close Series 1 with one powerful reminder:
✨ Purpose is not only discovered. It is built through contribution.

Over nine episodes, we walked through real tools for real transitions:
βœ… Your story as an asset β€” not something to hide
βœ… Action before readiness
βœ… Setbacks decoded, not just endured
βœ… Consistency built as architecture
βœ… Leadership grown before the title

Today we arrive at the question underneath all of them.
Not: What should I do?
But: Why does any of it matter?

The people who found direction through mentorship were not the ones who waited for a calling. They were the ones who gave something of themselves to a cause, a community, a person β€” before they felt fully ready.

Purpose found them through the act of contributing. And we believe it is finding you too.

Thank you to everyone who walked this journey with us β€” watching, sharing, reflecting, and growing together.

And this is not the end. πŸ”₯

Series 2 is coming. We are going deeper β€” into mentorship, leadership, identity, resilience, and the kind of people we are becoming.

Please watch, share, and subscribe β€” because someone else may still need this message.

Most People Wait for the Title. Leaders Don’t.

Let me tell you about a young man named Daniel. A Junior coordinator. No title. No formal authority. But when something wasn’t working, he didn’t stay quiet to protect himself. He spoke up clearly, specifically, and respectfully.

Nobody scheduled his promotion. They simply recognised what he had already become.

That’s the heart of Episode 9 of Sankofa Speaks β€” From Aspiration to Action.

Leadership isn’t waiting for you at the top of a ladder. It’s already present in the small, daily decisions you make when no one is watching.

Watch, share, and tell me β€” who was a β€œDaniel” in your life? Someone who led before they had the title?

YOU DON’T NEED A TITLE TO LEAD

Too many people wait for permission before stepping into leadership.

But leadership does not begin with a position.
It begins with character, responsibility, consistency, and the courage to positively influence others.

This short reflection is especially for young people, newcomers, and emerging leaders navigating uncertainty while trying to grow with purpose.

Your voice matters.
Your example matters.
Your leadership can begin today.

Reflections from the Community Benefits Summit 2026 β€” Toronto

Had a really meaningful day at the Community Benefits Summit 2026 in Toronto, organized by the Toronto Community Benefits Network (TCBN) β€” a room full of people serious about turning possibility into policy, sharing experiences, wrestling with challenges, and mapping out opportunities together.

, Executive Director of framed it well: data informs evidence, and evidence informs policy. His call to not just create employment but genuinely retain workers β€” especially from equity-deserving communities β€” hit close to home.

The and brought real youth voices into the room. One of the most honest conversations of the day centred on casino development projects β€” seen by some as genuine economic opportunity for communities, and by others as a serious social concern. Both perspectives were legitimate. That tension is exactly what community benefits frameworks must be courageous enough to hold.

The moment that stayed with me most was a powerful PhD research insight on why so many highly educated immigrants cannot access work that matches their qualifications. A doctor driving a cab. An engineer on a warehouse floor. Not by choice, by systemic failure.

This is precisely why Sankofa Afri-Canadian Mentorship+ Hub exists and why our EMERGE+ Futures Initiative matters. We are not just delivering programs β€” we are building the research evidence, through our ongoing partnership with Zalates Analytics, to turn lived experience into policy-grade knowledge. The talent is here. The work is closing the gap.

🎬 Episode 9 of Sankofa Speaks is Live now!

This episode is for every young professional who has been told to wait.

For every newcomer who feels their experience isn’t being seen.

For every community member quietly doing the work β€” without recognition.

βœ… Take responsibility before you are asked
βœ… Support others without being required to
βœ… Tell the truth when silence would be easier

That is leadership.
Not a title.
Not a formal role.
Not someone else’s permission.

Motivation is not always enough.

Not every day will feel inspiring.
Some days you will doubt yourself.
Some days you will feel behind.
Some days you will feel tired.

But growth is not built only on motivation.
It is built on continuing anyway.

🌱 Small steps matter.
🌱 Consistency matters.
🌱 Showing up matters.

Keep building.
Your future is still forming.
