What We Do

Maintain Italian values and traditions in the multi- cultural pattern of Canadian life. Integrate Italians into the Canadian community. Combat vigorously discrimination against Canadians of Italian origin. Foster full participation of Italian Canadians in the economic, political and social life of the nation. Preserve and record the history and achievements of the Italian community in Canada. Develop services to help the needy, the sick, the old and the young in the Italian Canadian commu nity through financial contribution to worthy agencies. Encourage the learning of both English and French by Italian Canadians. Promote mutual understanding, goodwill, and cooperation between Canadians of Italian and other origins. Act as a link between various Italian Canadian communities and organizations that are dispersed across the countries. Help Italians in Canada retain their rich cultural heritage and interpret the attributes of that heritage to fellow Canadians. Promote creative endeavours and interchanges with other Canadian cultural groups. Uphold the prestige, dignity and good name of Italian Canadians so that not only they, but their children and descendants as well, will be proud to be part of the Italian Canadian community.

Since 1998, the NCIC Toronto District has also presented the Youth Achievement Award, honouring Canadian Italian youth who have made meaningful contributions to society.

This year, we are delighted to present this award to Ms. Emily Fusco, Founder & President, The Butterfly Effect Association of CanadaInspired by her own transplant journey, Emily Fusco founded The Butterfly Effect Association of Canada following a life-saving kidney transplant from her mother in 2024. Through her leadership, the organization supports transplant recipients, donors, and families through community initiatives, practical resources, and compassionate peer support.

ORDINE AL MERITO 2026 Recipient Mr. Donato (Danny) Montesano, is the founder of Lido Construction Inc., a premier carpentry firm that has shaped the Toronto skyline for over 50 years. Arriving in Canada from Basilicata, Italy, in 1966, Danny built his company from "two workers, three hammers and a pail of nails" into a highly regarded industry leader known for its craftsmanship and integrity. Beyond his entrepreneurial success, Danny is a dedicated philanthropist and community pillar. He is a founding member of the Basilicata Cultural Society of Canada, a key supporter of the Italian-Canadian daily *Corriere Canadese*, and a major benefactor to local healthcare and police services. A man of deep faith, his most cherished achievement remains crafting the Altar and Cross for Pope St. John Paul II during World Youth Day 2002. Today, Danny continues to champion community growth and excellence in the construction trades.

ORDINE AL MERITO 2026 Recipient Dr. Roberta Iannacito-Provenzano, Provost and Vice-President, Academic at Toronto Metropolitan University (TMU).

Roberta will become TMU’s 10th President and Vice-Chancellor on January 4, 2027, making her the first woman and first Italian to hold this role. A full professor in the Department of Languages, Literatures and Cultures, she is a widely published scholar whose research focuses on Italian language, culture, identity, and diasporic studies. Since joining TMU in 2020, Roberta as provided executive leadership across the academic enterprise, championing student success. Deeply committed to equity, diversity, inclusion, access and Reconciliation, Roberta advances initiatives addressing systemic barriers affecting women. Roberta has received numerous leadership awards, including WXN’s Canada’s Most Powerful Women: Top 100™ Award (2025), and is fluent in English, French, and Italian.

On Labour Day the National Congress of Italian Canadians held a celebration at the CNE. It was a beautiful reminder of what makes our community so special: people coming together, giving of themselves, sharing their talents, and keeping our culture and traditions alive.

Board Members of the National Congress of Italian Canadians – Toronto District were honoured to participate in the CNE Labour Day Exposition, where our dedicated volunteers had the opportunity to proudly display their artwork and showcase their incredible creativity.

Our Italian-Canadian community was built by generations before us through hard work, sacrifice, faith, family, culture, and an unwavering commitment to one another. It is now our responsibility to carry that legacy forward.

A sincere and heartfelt GRAZIE to everyone who volunteered, participated, visited our exhibit, offered their support, and helped make this day such a wonderful success. Your generosity and commitment are what keep our community strong.

On the evening of November 7th, the National Congress of Italian Canadians – Toronto District (NCIC-TD) is hosting its annual Ordine Al Merito Gala. If you would like to attend or sponsor, please see the attached information and contact us at [email protected].

The Ordine al Merito is the NCIC Toronto District’s highest award of excellence, established in 1988 to recognize outstanding Canadians of Italian heritage.

This year's recipients are;

A Wonderful Evening of Welcome, Friendship & Italian-Canadian Community

Tonight, the National Congress of Italian Canadians – Toronto District (NCIC-TD) had the honour of hosting a special Welcome Reception for this year’s recipients of our Ordine al Merito Awards Gala, taking place on Saturday, November 7, 2026.

It was a beautiful evening in a relaxed and welcoming atmosphere, an opportunity for our honourees to meet one another, share stories, build new friendships, and simply enjoy each other’s company before the celebration in November. ❤️

A sincere thank you to everyone who joined us this evening to help make the reception so special.

We were especially honoured by the presence of Mayor Steven Del Duca and the newly appointed Consul General of Italy in Toronto, Andrea Bertozzi. Your presence added great meaning to an evening dedicated to celebrating our community and its remarkable people.

To all of our 2026 Ordine al Merito recipients, welcome to this year's celebration. We look forward to honouring each of you and sharing your stories with our community on November 7th.
