Ode to a Warren Park Hockey Mom

Before the sun has even stretched its light,
she’s lacing up a day that starts in night,
thermos filled, backseat piled high with gear,
the quiet hum of purpose crystal clear.
She knows the rinks by scent and by sound,
cold air and coffee, skates carving ground,
a seat along the glass where she will stay,
watching every shift and every play.
Her voice cuts through the early morning chill,
“Head up! Skate hard!” a practiced, loving will.
Not loud for glory, never there for show,
but steady as the Zamboni’s patient glow.
She tapes up sticks, she wipes away the tears,
she carries wins and losses through the years,
a quiet strength in bleachers worn and wide,
with pride that never needs a place to hide.
Between the drills, the carpools, and the games,
she learns each player’s hopes, recalls their names,
a second team she mothers from afar,
each jersey number like a guiding star.
And when the final buzzer fades to rest,
she gathers up the pieces, gives her best,
a hug, a snack, a “you’ll get ’em next time,”
turning fleeting moments into something prime.
Oh, Warren Park mom, fierce and full of grace,
you build more than a player in that place,
in every frozen rink your spirit roams,
the heart behind a hundred hockey homes.
