🗣️Rignam Wangkhang is CBC News’ first AI Advisor and co-founder of the Canadian AI Journalism Network. He is helping lead the integration of generative AI across Canada’s national newsrooms, with a focus on ensuring the technology strengthens, rather than erodes, community trust.

🗣️Madeleine Case leads policy and strategic initiatives at TMU’s Democratic Engagement Exchange, where she works to strengthen inclusive civic participation through policy development and cross-sector collaboration. As artificial intelligence reshapes how information is created, shared and understood, Canada faces a critical question: how can it protect trusted information environments from AI-driven manipulation, misinformation and foreign interference while preserving open public debate?

Featuring Rignam Wangkhang, AI Advisor at CBC News and co-founder of the Canadian AI Journalism Network, and Madeleine Case, Policy and Strategic Initiatives Lead at Toronto Metropolitan University’s Democratic Engagement Exchange, this interactive discussion will examine how generative AI, synthetic media and algorithmically amplified content are changing public discourse.

How did Canada begin to find its voice on the world stage?

The story runs through the Institute of Pacific Relations. Early CIIA members attended its first conference in Honolulu in 1925, helping connect Canada to an emerging international network of scholars, policymakers and public thinkers.

By 1942, Escott Reid and CIIA president Edgar J. Tarr had helped bring the eighth IPR Conference to Mont Tremblant. The gathering drew officials and scholars into discussions on the Second World War, India and China, and helped establish Canada as a convenor in the emerging postwar order.

⭕ AI won't transform Canada's public services if governments can't agree on which data to trust.

Canada has no shortage of government data. The challenge is determining which records are authoritative, how information can move lawfully between institutions, and who remains accountable for its use.

In Open Canada, Patrick Spencer argues that the missing piece of Canada's AI strategy isn't another chatbot or better model. It's the trusted digital infrastructure beneath it.
