⚖️ The Supreme Court of Canada’s landmark ruling in Ahluwalia v. Ahluwalia recognizes a new tort of intimate partner violence (IPV).

🏛️ The legal system is often a source of retraumatization and harm for survivors of gendered violence. While this ruling does not create “guaranteed” justice, it helps strengthen victims’ access to justice and to civil damages through the courts. A needle moving in the right direction.

We’re deeply grateful to Kuldeep Kaur Ahluwalia for her vulnerability, strength, and courage in taking this to Canada’s highest court.

We also want to thank all feminists, anti-violence advocates and organizations for intervening in the case to address the nuances of family violence and the experiences of survivors of coercive control, including our comrades at Women’s Legal Education and Action Fund (LEAF), Rise Women’s Legal Centre, National Association of Women and the Law (NAWL), DAWN Canada, Luke’s Place, and Battered Women’s Support Services (BWSS).

CW: Mentions of r*pe, premeditated sexual violence, patriarchy, and policies/legislation that protect predators from accountability

We’ve read the CNN Report and are despondent and disheartened by the existence of an online r*pe academy.

We are all responsible for creating a safer world, but in this moment, we are calling on cis men not to distance themselves from intimate-partner violence and from all forms of GBV that plague our communities.

We need less silencing, gaslighting, and antagonizing survivors, and more commitment to listening, acknowledging harm, and advocating for systems-level change.
