Black Women in Motion Welcome to the ‘Virtual Hub’ of Black Women in Motion!

We work within an anti-racist, Black intersectional feminist and survivor-centred framework to provide educational resources, wraparound support and economic opportunities for Black survivors of gender-based violence. This is the point of convergence and connectivity for many that are seeking opportunities to collaborate, participate, educate, advocate, volunteer and donate to this youth-led initiative.

CW: Mentions of r*pe, premeditated sexual violence, patriarchy, and policies/legislation that protect predators from accountability

We’ve read the CNN Report and are despondent and disheartened by the existence of an online r*pe academy.

We are all responsible for creating a safer world, but in this moment, we are calling on cis men not to distance themselves from intimate-partner violence and from all forms of GBV that plague our communities.

We need less silencing, gaslighting, and antagonizing survivors, and more commitment to listening, acknowledging harm, and advocating for systems-level change.

Content Warning: Mentions of grooming, child sexual abuse, and r**e culture

The discourse online about Brandy’s new Memoir, ‘PHASES,’ reveals the depth of the gaslighting, silencing, and erasure of Black girls who have experienced gender-based violence. Just because it was “how it was back then” does not make any relationship with a minor acceptable. Any adult “dating” an underage girl is engaging in grooming and is a predator.

Sadly, anti-black racism, misogynoir, r**e culture and a lack of institutional accountability enable predators to groom and commit acts of violence in our communities without consequences.

Black girls deserve love and protection, not adultification and disposability.

Today is Transgender Day of Visibility (TDOV), a day to acknowledge and celebrate the existence and contributions of Two-Spirit, trans, and non-binary people🏳️‍⚧️⚧️

Today, we proudly stand with Black trans and non-binary survivors who face higher levels of discrimination and deadly violence worldwide. Our shared goal of creating a world free from gender-based violence must acknowledge and include the unique experiences of Black trans and gender-diverse people.

We remember and honour those who are no longer with us, while working together to create a safer future for those still here.

This International Women’s Day, under the theme “Give to Gain,” we celebrate the strength, resilience, and leadership of African, Caribbean, and Black (ACB) women.

In this video, the African and Caribbean Council on HIV and AIDS in Ontario, Women’s Health in Women’s Hands (WHIWH), and Black Women In Motion (BWIM) discuss how Gender-Based Violence (GBV) and HIV/AIDS intersect and disproportionately impact Black women, girls, and gender-expansive communities.

💜 Today, we honour and celebrate the various ways ACB women contribute to their communities. They demonstrate their commitment through advocacy, collaboration, and a profound dedication to supporting Black individuals living with HIV and those facing gender-based violence.

March 8th is International Women’s Day!

💜 As we celebrate and honour the system disruptors, activists, pioneers, and community champions, past and present, we must also acknowledge the regressive movements gaining momentum in Canada and around the world that seek to undo the progress we’ve made.

💜 Today, we reflect on the disparities that persist and the communities often left behind in our fight for gender justice and liberation. Safety, self-determination, prosperity, and freedom for all of us, not just some of us! ✊🏽✊🏾✊🏿

“The public scrutiny and dehumanization faced by civilians who have been kidnapped, unlawfully detained, and murdered by ICE agents mirror the victim-blaming and shaming often experienced by survivors of gender-based violence. Gender-based violence has long been used by police, militaries, immigration enforcement, and armed groups as a tool to assert dominance, instill fear, exert control, and punish civilians. As America further descends into an autocratic police state, it will continue to target the most marginalized while systematically protecting abusers. ICE is a lawless agency, and the presence of its agents in our communities will only lead to heightened brutality and loss of life on a massive scale. We cannot reform such a violent institution with more training, funding, or oversight. Policing of any kind will never provide justice or safety for survivors of violence.” — Monica Samuel, Founder, Black Women In Motion
