“We need to expand our spiritual window to learn how to sit with life’s discomforts since God has not promised us an easy life. Rather, God has provided us with a spiritual template anchored in divine mindfulness to help us navigate our way through the difficult moments.”

In the name of God, most Gracious, most Merciful,

All praise and thanks is for God and may His peace and blessings be upon His beloved Messenger Muhammad, his family, his companions and the righteous everywhere.

We at Muslim Chaplaincy of Toronto are well aware of the challenging moments we are presently experiencing. However, please be reminded that God says, “O believers! Seek comfort in patience and prayer. God is truly with those who are patient.” (Quran 2:153) And, “God is your Guardian and He is the best of Helpers.” (Quran 2:150).

Our beloved Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) taught us to maintain divine hopefulness with sacred vision and certainty.

He says, “Hoping for good is an act of worship towards God.” (Tirmidhi and Hakim).” And, “Supplicate to Almighty God and be certain that He will answer your prayers” (Tirmidhi).

Also, the believers are positive in every circumstance. The Messenger of God (peace be upon him) says,

“Wondrous is the affair of the believer for there is good for him/her in every matter and this is not the case with anyone except the believer. If he/she is happy, then he/she thanks Allah and thus there is good for him/her. If he/she is harmed, then he/she shows patience and thus there is good for him/her.” (Muslim).

In light of the above scriptures we can understand that the believers are characterized by the exalted virtues of patience, hopefulness, optimism, and above all thankfulness during times of hardship and/or ease. Therefore, we ask God Almighty to plant the seed of certainty within our hearts during these times of difficulty, and allow those seeds to germinate, grow and produce the fruits that will increase our faith and submission to Him!

“And this only increased them in faith and submission.” (Quran 33:22)

Although personal counselling sessions have been tentatively placed on hold until April 6th, Muslim Chaplaincy of Toronto will be accepting requests from UofT and Ryerson University students and staff for phone consultations. Please visit www.calendly.com/mcuoft to book an appointment to speak with a chaplain.

May God bless, guide and protect our communities.

“Indeed, to God we belong and to God we shall return."

On behalf of Muslim Chaplaincy of Toronto we wish to extend our sincere condolences to family, friends and colleagues of the victims of yesterday’s tragic plane crash in Tehran, Iran.

From early reports, we know that many of the victims were Iranian-Canadian students and professionals connected to Canadian post-secondary institutions. Muslim Chaplaincy of Toronto will be available to receive grieving students and staff at our offices located at Emmanuel College on the campus of the University of Toronto. As well, students and staff are welcome to visit www.calendly.com/mcuoft to book a free and confidential appointment to visit with University of Toronto chaplain Imam Yasin Dwyer and our chaplaincy staff.

May God illuminate the graves of those who tragically lost their lives and may He grant patience and healing to loved ones left behind.

Connection and Attachment

True spiritual leadership leads to connection, not attachment. Connection is empowering, while attachment leaves one dependant and vulnerable.

Many people settle for spiritual attachment because they secretly want to be owned, rather than deal with the responsibility associated with freedom. This is well-known to many spiritual leaders, religious groups and especially cults. They skillfully maneuver our longing for meaningful connection with God, towards an unhealthy spiritual attachment to an individual or group. The tragic result of such a relationship is not only to lose faith in once trusted religious authorities, but to lose faith in oneself. So, instead of hating those who make false promises of spiritual discovery, the victims of this game of manipulation end up hating themselves. A painful state, from which it is nearly impossible to recover. Spiritual attachment can potentially be more dangerous than material attachment, as spiritual attachment is more subtle and hidden; and typically projected as noble. However, the true goal of every sincere spiritual seeker should always be about connectedness to God and never blind attachment to religious groups and leaders; as attachment, whether material or spiritual in any form is an illusion. The pursuit of spiritual truth should never be dependent upon surrendering your autonomy; it can only be found in the hearts unconditional freedom from attachments, material or spiritual.

May God protect us from false attachments and guide us to genuine connectedness with Him, the true Owner of all things.
