We grew up with the idea that real faith was for those who never wrested with questions—this superhuman ability to believe without wavering. we pictured faith as this destination where you finally put to rest all your wonderings, and never tangled again with your doubts. It was this beautiful image. we werent sure we would ever get there, but there was always this hope I would.
But then we began to read the stories of truly faithful men and women. we read these stories of trial and triumph—of wrestling and overcoming, and slowly realize that picture didn't fit. we realize these weren't people without questions, just people willing to trust a God who was bigger than the gaps in their understanding.
What if faith wasn't exactly what we thought it was? What if faith wasn't just for the paid professional holy men, or the canonized saints throughout the ages? What if faith isn't the absence of doubt, but forward motion in the face of it?
It's a curious thing. When you actually read the stories of faithful men and women, and listen to their prayers, you begin to realize that what set them apart wasn't the fact that they never had questions—it was the choice they made to trust a God who was bigger than them.
Let's forget all the whitewashed stories we tell, where we hide our imperfections. Let's start to talk about real faith. Because Jesus promised us that an ounce of that can change the world...
"Truly I tell you, if you have faith as small as a mustard seed, you can say to this mountain, 'Move from here to there,' and it will move. Nothing will be impossible for you”
Matthew 17:20
