Today, for National Indigenous People’s Day, we are celebrating Indigenous leaders in our community.

Laurie McDonald, also known as Marvin and Wabamum, was raised by strong women—his grandmother, birth mother, and adoptive mother.
He survived Ermineskin Residential School in 1963 and later earned a Bachelor of Education. Laurie taught special education for 27 years across Canada.

In 2001, he transitioned to child welfare, serving as an investigator and child protection social worker with Indigenous and provincial agencies, and later instructing social workers in Victoria, BC.

Laurie retired in 2019 and returned home to Enoch, where he remains inspired by his people’s resilience and continues to share his gifts. He was awarded the King Charles III Coronation Medal in 2025.
