Earth is a blue planet, with approximately 71% of its surface covered by water.
Beneath the surface of the Great Lakes, the lakebed forms the foundation of the freshwater environment. By storing carbon, filtering contaminants and cycling nutrients, the sediments below are the engine of the aquatic ecosystem.

Much of our human impact upon the lakebed goes unnoticed, though it still needs protection.

This , let’s celebrate the foundation of the waters that support life across the Great Lakes–St. Lawrence watershed and the oceans beyond.

The Great Lakes are out of this world!!!

Sometimes referred to as the ā€˜blue marble’, Earth is a delicately balanced ecosystem whose scale can only be truly appreciated from space. As the Artemis II crew continues to release photos, and we marvel at the sheer beauty of our planet from afar, we are reminded of what makes all life on Earth possible: water.

The Great Lakes hold some 20% of the Earth’s surface fresh water. Transcending political borders, the Great Lakes basin spans across multiple nations and has laid the foundation for life, cultural development, travel and trade in the region for millenia. Without these natural wonders, life as we know it would exist.

Images collected by missions such as Artemis 2, and space-bound satellite missions help give us a new perspective on the changes in the Great Lakes over time. These missions allow us to accurately measure water surface temperature, algae blooms, and ice cover across the entirety of the Great Lakes over several decades, highlighting how these ecosystems have changed over time. As witnesses to these changes, we are collectively responsible to take action to ensure these resources are available now, and for future generations.

In the words of Artemis 2 astronaut, Victor Glover, we ā€œhave this oasis, this beautiful place that we get to exist togetherā€. Whether it be the Great Lakes, or any other water body on our blue planet, we share the benefits derived from, and the responsibility to care for the water. Take some time today to appreciate your local water body and the life it sustains.

It’s encouraging to see a renewed focus on protecting the lands and waters that shape communities across Canada. šŸ‡ØšŸ‡¦

The new Nature Strategy from Prime Minister Mark Carney commits to protecting up to 2.4 million km² of land and ocean, alongside long-term investment in conservation. It’s a meaningful step forward, especially at a time when so much feels uncertain.

At the end of the day, strong communities depend on healthy ecosystems. We can’t have healthy communities without healthy waters, and we can’t have healthy waters without supporting the people who care for them.

There’s still a lot of work ahead, but it’s good to see this kind of momentum.

Canada’s natural beauty is central to our history, our identity, and our way of life — and we’re going to protect it.

On the Great Lakes, we see the impact water has on people and places. It is a reminder of where we’ve been and why it’s so important to protect them. 🌊

Today, for World Water Day, we’re taking a moment to appreciate how the Great Lakes have impacted so many of us as a reminder of just how important freshwater really is.
