🌿 Growing, Harvesting & Learning with KUUMBA Summer Camp! 🌱
On August 5th, we had the pleasure of welcoming KUUMBA Summer Camp to Black Creek Community Farm for an exciting day of hands-on farm education!
Our campers got their hands in the soil and learned how to fertilize garden beds using chicken manure and explored different ways to grow plants by planting seedlings in both garden beds and grow bags. 🌱
The learning continued in the herb garden, where students harvested a variety of herbs while discovering their beneficial properties and traditional uses. They learned how herbs can be dehydrated and preserved, and prepared lemon balm for drying while exploring how people have used plants for food, wellness, and everyday life across generations. 🍃
To wrap up their experience, students created their own herb bundles to take home, giving them a special reminder of their time learning and growing at the farm. 💚
Thank you to KUUMBA Summer Camp for spending the day with us! We loved seeing students get curious, connect with the land, and discover the many ways plants have supported communities throughout generations.

What a wonderful day at the farm! 🌿
We were honoured to welcome the youth from the R.I.T.E.S. Collaborative Program for a day of connection, learning, and hands-on experiences at Black Creek Community Farm. Together, we explored the farm, got our hands in the garden through experimenting with grow bags, and planting kale, tomatoes, peppers, eggplants and various herbs in the youth garden. We also learned how to dry medicinal herbs and brewed herbal tea with the Farm Park team, and created nourishing DIY body butters. Even with a few bugs and some unpredictable weather, the energy, curiosity, and enthusiasm of the group made the day truly special.
Thank you to the R.I.T.E.S. Collaborative Program for spending the day with us! We’re grateful for the opportunity to support youth through meaningful outdoor learning and look forward to collaborating again in the future! 🌱💚

Join the Farm Education & Urban Harvest Program team for hands-on gardening and food preservation activities designed for families with children in Kindergarten to Grade 6.

What if donating fresh food could come with a tax credit?

Last week, Daily Bread Food Bank CEO Neil Hetherington presented policy recommendations to the House of Commons that could help strengthen Canada's food system and support both growers and communities facing food insecurity.

One proposal is a Federal Food Donation Tax Credit for farmers and food producers who donate surplus food to community programs. This would help get more fresh, nutritious food into the hands of people who need it most while supporting the growers who make it possible.

Policies like this could create meaningful change for local farmers and food growers by encouraging food donations, reducing waste, and increasing access to fresh produce. It also recognizes the important role growers play in nourishing our communities.

Here at Black Creek Community Farm, programs like Urban Harvest connect community members to locally grown fruits and vegetables throughout the growing season. Their success speaks for itself, collecting over 400 kgs of surplus harvest, redistributing it to the local community and using it in our famous food tastings.
