It is the first time our group took such a political stand and organized a pre-election evening with the municipal candidate for the coming up election!

The meeting was organized as part of the Ward Project: a Toronto initiative reaching out to all the municipal candidates to ask them key questions about the environmental future of our City. In Scarborough Centre, out of the 11 candidates, 4 had no contact information, seven have not answered and two have answered the questions and have joined us for the meeting: krissan4scarb and taibafor21. We also asked the participants what changes they wanted to see in our ward.

Please check out the ward project website in our bio.
Thank you Carolyn for all you hard work and commongoodbeer for hosting the event 😊

Thank you to our amazing volunteers who made our last Repair Café possible by donating that time and skills to fix or community’s items. It is really special to come on a Saturday and help your community. Thank you Denis, Simon, Ken, Laura, Celina, Sayed and Andy!
Special thank you to Catherine from the Bendale Butterfly Way for your presence and help offering a seed Library at our event!
See you in a few weeks for our last Repair Café of the year on November 27 at Scarborough Citadel.

Last April, our group visited the tfscampus. Our executive director quentin_debecker and his wife fresacornejo gave an inspiring presentation on their family and community journey toward a zero-waste lifestyle.
During this one-hour presentation (with some accordion tunes!), the Grade 3 students were able to discover Toronto's waste management challenges, as well as practical strategies to adopt at home, at school, and in the neighborhood to apply the 6 R's of waste reduction.
Students showed great curiosity and asked engaging questions. A big thank you to Quentin and Cristina for helping advance our group's mission: raising young people's awareness of environmental issues and helping them develop their waste literacy!

Join us for Scarborough Zero Waste’s next repair Café on Sep 19th from 10am to 1pm at the Scarborough Citadel to fix your damaged clothing and faulty small appliances as well as jewelry! Our fixers will welcome you and do their best to help you while showing you how to fix things the next time something breaks!

We are looking for volunteers to help us sew and repair clothes as well as small appliances. If you want to help, contact us please!

As you may know, SZW’s mission is to promote a circular economy in Scarborough as this would help create local channels and ease the second hand economy. This is why we are adding a “Drop box” to our Repair café where participants can drop items in need or items that do not belong in the garbage bin (but can still be recycled). Here are the items:

- Egg Cartons: We have noticed that food banks need egg cartons to better serve their community. That’s why we are inviting you to drop as many as you can. We will distribute them to the proper location.
- Brita items (filters and bottles) and Swiffer items (all kinds of refills) : Our member Anne is involved in the program and she can take care of those items that don’t go in the City of Toronto Recycling program.
- Reusable bags: Who doesn’t have extra reusable bags home nowadays? Instead of throwing them in the garbage (since they are rarely recyclable), bring them to us and we will give them to a food bank who can use it!

Please note that registration ends at 12:30.
Reminder : please bring clean clothes for them to be repaired

The first 60 guests can enjoy food and drinks catered by our local vendors, served in zero-waste packaging, and we’ll finish the day with a giveaway where you can win zero-waste goodies. Feel free to bring your own bowls and cutlery to enjoy the soup and dessert and get more entries into the giveaway! This event is organized by the community's youth leaders.

So glad we could work with Salma Zaid's team this year. Last weekend, we have been able to support her Community BBQ sustainability goals by implementing a sorting station and open a conversation with the city of Toronto about organic waste management in public parks. Thank you Vilina for coordinating our Eco Team Program this summer!
