Emancipation Day honours the past while fighting for justice today and tomorrow

On Emancipation Day: https://www.canada.ca/en/canadian-heritage/campaigns/emancipation-day.html, observed annually on Aug. 1, we honour Canada's complete history, including the history of slavery, to reflect on this painful chapter in our past and renew our commitment to building a more just future.
Emancipation Day is not only a time to commemorate the abolition of slavery, but also to recognize the lasting harms and ongoing impacts of slavery and segregation on Black Canadians today. These histories continue to shape systemic inequities in education, health care, housing, employment, and the justice system.
Marking the day means telling a more complete Canadian history: one that acknowledges slavery, honours the resilience and contributions of Black communities, and confronts the ongoing effects of anti-Black racism. Through education, reflection and collective action, Emancipation Day calls on all Canadians to advance equity, justice, and opportunity for future generations.
The House of Commons voted unanimously on March 24, 2021, to officially designate the first day of August as Emancipation Day in Canada. It marks the actual day in 1834 that the Slavery Abolition Act of 1833 came into effect, creating a pathway to freeing enslaved people in British colonies across the globe and in Canada.
But the work of justice is far from over, even here at home.
Emancipation Day is a call to action, a reminder of the resilience of those who fought for liberation, and a recognition of the work still ahead of us.
True freedom includes economic justice, dignity at work, and the right to organize without fear. For generations, workers have fought to challenge exploitation and inequality, recognizing that the struggle for racial justice and the struggle for workers' rights is inseparable.

Their work reminds us that building fairer workplaces is an essential part of building a society where the voices of Black, Indigenous and workers of colour matter and hold power.

By investing in initiatives that combat discrimination, strengthen communities, and expand opportunities for marginalized people, we continue the work of solidarity that Emancipation Day calls on all of us to embrace, not just in remembrance of the past, but through meaningful action today.
This day celebrates the strength, resilience, and enduring contributions of Black communities in Canada. As we commemorate Aug. 1, we encourage members to learn more about Canada's history, participate in local events, and continue the work of challenging anti-Black and anti-Indigenous racism in our workplaces, communities and in society.

Windsor-Essex Emancipation Jubilee
The Windsor-Essex Emancipation Jubilee returns July 31 to Aug. 3, 2026, celebrating Emancipation Day through music, culture, history, food and community events. Three Unifor Windsor locals and the Ontario Regional Council have sponsored the event and will have a Unifor tent. All events are free and open to the public.
