This week’s bedtime story: the school that came by train. 🚂📚

One hundred years ago, children in the railway camps of Northern Ontario lived too far from any town to go to school. So Canada put a school on railway wheels and sent it to them. A teacher named Fred Sloman and his wife, Cela, from Clinton, Ontario, ran one for decades — the car would park for a week, hold class, leave homework, and roll on to the next camp. Some nights it became a tiny movie theatre in the forest.

In the summer of 1940, one of the greatest fortunes ever moved crossed Canada by train — and the towns it passed through never knew.

With Britain facing invasion, the UK secretly shipped its gold reserves — and those of Denmark and Norway — across the Atlantic for safekeeping in Canada. Code name: Operation Fish. The bullion came ashore at Halifax disguised as fish freight and moved west by night along the CNR mainline: Amherst, Sackville, Campbellton, into Quebec, to the vaults of Montreal and Ottawa. Over $7 billion in gold and securities.

In Amherst, Nova Scotia, a night-shift railwayman held the line clear for trains he was told not to ask about. This week Castor tells his story — and makes the case that sometimes a small town enters history not because the train stops, but because someone made sure it didn’t have to.

Ten years ago this month, a whole country stopped to watch a hometown band say goodbye.

On August 20, 2016, The Tragically Hip played their final concert at the Rogers K-Rock Centre in Kingston, Ontario. Their frontman, Gord Downie, was dying of brain cancer, and everyone — in the arena and the third of the country watching on CBC — knew it.

The Hip were never the biggest band in Canada. They were the most Canadian one, singing about the places most bands ignored: Bobcaygeon, prairie main streets, small-town hockey rinks. At the end, Downie stood alone and looked out at the town that raised him.

Ten years on, Kingston marks the anniversary. Castor remembers the night.

One afternoon. One country. A thousand kitchens doing the same thing.

Castor started wondering how many kitchens in Canada were making jam this same Sunday — so he called the cousins. Peaches cooling in Peachland, BC. Haskaps crushed in Beaverlodge, AB. Saskatoons in Rosthern. Chokecherries boiling purple in Boissevain, MB. Bakeapples guarded like jewellery in Bonavista, NL. Golden aqpik lifted from the tundra in Kinngait, NU.

Something new this week — and it’s for the littlest readers.

We’ve added a bedtime story to the bottom of Castor’s Letter: Storytime with Uncle Castor. Every Monday, a short tale from a small Canadian town, meant to be read aloud from an armchair before bed.

The first is A Little Bear from Canada. In 1914, a train stopped at the little station in White River, Ontario. A young army vet named Harry noticed a small black bear cub, paid twenty dollars, and named her Winnie — after Winnipeg. She sailed to England, ended up at the London Zoo, and a boy named Christopher Robin loved her so much he renamed his teddy bear after her. His father was a writer…
This fall, the first Winnie-the-Pooh book turns 100. But it began at a small station in northern Ontario.

Some jars hold more than jam.
On a shelf in Cousin Oxford’s pantry — in Oxford, Nova Scotia, the Wild Blueberry Capital of Canada — sits a jar of blueberry jam that has never been opened. It’s dated 1994. She keeps one from every August: a private calendar, sealed in glass.

Castor spent Sunday at her kitchen table (told twice not to help) while she put up jar number thirty-three. Wild blueberries, sugar, a little lime “to wake them up.” And then the smallest sound in Canada — the ping of a lid sealing shut. In February, Cousin Oxford says, it’ll sound much larger.
