1000 Towns of Canada 1000towns.ca is a digital platform (website, app, social media accounts) connecting small Canadian towns and travellers. We create and launch unique town pages Top Places to Visit in Your Town with the help of towns’ residents. Additionally, we build mobile app to create road trip planner to help travellers using town attractions/events database easy and effectively. Moreover, we build a 1000 Towns of Canada Network of Ambassadors (representatives) to popularize/promote local travel, keep local attractions/events data up to date, increase the sense of community and pride of their towns.

Canada’s most famous groundhog has a successor.

After Wiarton Willie — the beloved albino groundhog of Wiarton, Ontario — died this past March, the town has quietly found a rare white understudy to carry on Canada’s biggest Groundhog Day tradition, held each February on the shore of Georgian Bay. The show, as they say, must go on.

“That’s a Canadian sweater,” Castor said. Cousin Duncan smiled and asked: “Whose Canadian?”

This week Castor writes from Charles Hoey Park in Duncan, British Columbia — on Quw’utsun (Cowichan) land — about the sweater you’ve seen a hundred times: cream and brown, bold animal patterns, worn by everyone from Bing Crosby to Olympic athletes. We call it a Canadian icon. But it was made, stitch by stitch, by Coast Salish women of the Cowichan Valley.

This past March, a bronze plaque finally honoured them — trilingual, with Hul’q’umi’num’ first: Quw’utsun Swetu, The Cowichan Sweater. Its stand was painted by Stuart Pagaduan, a Coast Salish artist from the valley.

The border isn’t just a line on a map. In small towns, it runs through the middle of everyday life.

This week we followed the Canada–US line from coast to coast — through the towns where it does a hundred quiet, human things. A library shared by two countries. A golf course you tee off in one nation and putt in another. Streets where the boundary runs between neighbours’ houses. Prairie survey cairns and lonely border booths at the end of a mountain road.

The border is what the border does — and in small towns, what it mostly does is remind people they’re neighbours.

Fifty-four years ago today, a boy from Bruce County scored the goal that stopped the country cold.

September 28, 1972. Moscow. Thirty-four seconds left in Game 8 of the Summit Series. Paul Henderson — born near Kincardine, raised in Lucknow — put the puck past the Soviet goaltender, and Foster Hewitt’s voice cracked over the radio: “Henderson has scored for Canada!” It is still the most famous goal in Canadian history.

He had played his first hockey with a ball, not a puck; a neighbouring family gave him his first real equipment. This week’s People of Small Towns is the Bruce County boy behind the goal.

There’s a library that sits in two countries at once. This week, that stopped being simple.

The Haskell Free Library and Opera House has had two addresses since 1904: 93 Caswell Avenue, Stanstead, Quebec — and 1 Church Street, Derby Line, Vermont. A black line runs across the reading-room floor: Canada on one side, the United States on the other. A woman named Martha Stewart Haskell built it that way on purpose — half in her country, half in her late husband’s — so the children of both towns could share one library.

For 120 years, Vermonters could walk up the Canadian steps and borrow a book without formally crossing the border. On October 1, that arrangement ends — and the Haskell has quietly opened a new Canadian door, adapting the only way a library can.
