The Black & Caribbean Book Affair 2026 returns to Blackhurst Cultural Centre from October 15–17th, under the theme Seeing Ourselves -The Next Chapter.

This year’s programme brings together compelling conversations, Caribbean biography, children’s literature, memoir and historical fiction:

Thursday, October 15 | 6–8 PM
Dr. Carl James discusses the fifth edition of Seeing Ourselves: Exploring Race, Ethnicity & Culture with educators Marc Proudfoot and Ansar Dualeh.

Friday, October 16 | 6–8 PM
Ramie Veerappan joins Sandra Whiting for a conversation about Ramie’s Dance of Resilience: Apartheid and Beyond, written by Romila Logarahjah-Jeevithan.

Saturday, October 17
9–10 AM on Zoom: Gelien Matthews and Rhoma Spencer discuss Calypso Rose.
This book captures the unstoppable rise of a woman who broke through the male-dominated calypso world to claim titles once reserved only for men, including Calypso Monarch and Road March Champion.

11 AM–1 PM: A Parade of Children’s Books with Heather Beaumont, Delano Brown and host Yolanda Marshall.

4:30–6:30 PM: Didier Leclair launches The African Prince, the Translator, and the N**i in conversation with Canute Lawrence.

Introducing The Blackhurst Project, a new monthly series at Blackhurst Cultural Centre bringing scholars, writers and community together to explore Black thought, literature, arts and culture.

Our inaugural event takes place Thursday, October 8, featuring Jonathan Howard in conversation with I. Augustus Durham on Inhabitants of the Deep: The Blueness of Blackness.

📢Join us at Blackhurst Cultural Centre on Thursday, October 8, from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. for the first episode of The Blackhurst Project: a monthly series bringing authors, creatives, and deep thinkers together for compelling conversation.

For Episode 1, Dr. Jonathan Howard, Assistant Professor of African American Studies and English at Yale University and author of Inhabitants of the Deep: The Blueness of Blackness (Duke University Press, 2025), will be in conversation with I. Augustus Durham, PhD, Assistant Professor of English at the University of Toronto and author of Stay Black and Die: On Melancholy and Genius.

In Inhabitants of the Deep, Howard undertakes a Black ecocritical study of “the deep” in African American literature, exploring how oceans, rivers, lakes, and depth itself shape Black literary and expressive culture.

Looking for something meaningful to do before heading to Carnival tomorrow? Join us for Emancipation on Bloor.

Start your Carnival Day with community, culture and celebration as we walk together from Christie Pits to Bathurst and Bloor in recognition of Emancipation Day.

The morning will include music, drumming, dancing and community spirit. Following the walk, the celebration will continue at Bathurst and Bloor with refreshments and a community mapping activity.
