The Día de Los Mu***os Collective is a nonprofit that coordinates the efforts of Toronto´s community to bring a celebration that honors the dead, delights the living, promotes artistic creation and foster community development through tradition. At Wychwood barns in Toronto, this celebration has been entirely produced by the community, without big corporate sponsorship to fill the need to carry on

the celebration of the Day of the Dead in the way we do back home. As immigrants we feel the need to carry on with our customs to keep sight of who we are. Strengthening identity provides grounding for the individual in a new country and promotes self-esteem. The Day of the dead/Dia de los mu***os ceremony and celebration is a community event that happens every year at Artscape Wychwood Barns, located at 601 Christie Street, Toronto, from 4pm to 10pm.

CUICACALLI — The House of Song and Poetry

Rooted in Aztec tradition, the Cuicacalli was known as the House of Song, a sacred space where music, poetry, and collective memory intertwined.
In our celebration, Cuicacalli becomes a living altar, where artists from our community offer their creations, songs, poems, paintings, and movements as heartfelt tributes to those who are no longer with us in body, but remain in spirit.

Each offering breathes life into memory, reminding us that art itself is a form of ceremony.

Each year, a local artist creates a unique character design for the celebration. This year’s character centers on maíz (corn), symbolizing life and connection.
As the artist Luis Rojas explains, “Corn is seen as a universal element connecting people across the world. The farmers’ hands symbolize resilience against the oppression of GMO foods and transnational corporations, while the number seven evokes abundance and fertility.”
