I spent some time crushing work, having a pint and checking in with one of our Craft Brewery Passport spots Longslice Brewery! Cool spot in the bustling Canary District in TO, Longslice makes us laugh HARD with their witty social media and silly beer names. Did you know they launched a beer in space a couple years back!? 😂

The SOBDL was founded in late 2013. We initially thought to create a small, private society where women who could get together, share some beers and hang out. Co-owner Erica pitched the idea to 4 colleagues (Jaime Dobbs, Jennifer Reinhardt, Ren Navarro & Magenta Suzanne). Everyone was interested in trying out the concept...and the SOBDL was born with ‘Bevy 0001.’
Initially, Bevy 0001 was supposed to be a dozen or so women, hosted in one of the organizers apartments. An event listing was made up on Eventbrite... and by happy accident, over 90 tickets quickly sold! The ladies were pleasantly surprised and realized quickly that they needed to create a bigger, more organized event. A venue was secured, insurance and permits were procured and a craft beer list was curated. The first bevy was a big success and for over 3 years, a bevy was created in Toronto the last Friday of every month in a secret pop-up location.
Flash forward to present day and the SOBDL is owned and operated by Erica Campbell and Jaime Dobbs. Both women work in sales full-time at Ontario Craft Breweries: Henderson Brewing & Beau’s All Natural Brewing respectively. The SOBDL is now North America’s largest organization for women and beer community. It has evolved into one of the leading organizations in the Ontario Craft scene and is proud to offer women and those that identify safe and inclusive experiences. Regular bevy events continue in Toronto 3-4x a year and much larger ‘Lady Beer Festivals’ are also now apart of the SOBDL event repertoire. Festivals boast 1000+ self-identifying women, live music, live entertainment, over a dozen alcohol vendors, multiple food vendors, an artisan marketplace and more!
In addition, bevies are now popped up in Ottawa twice a year and Hamilton once a year. The SOBDL also brew collaborative beers monthly across the province, pop-up at multiple beer festivals selling their merchandise and pouring beer, sell their merch online with international shipping at ladiesdrinkbeer.com/shop, have a ‘GOOD TAP’ draught program at select Toronto-area craft beer bars that pour the collaboration beers with $1/pint supporting the SOBDL charity of choice and there is a permanent SOBDL retail listing at the LCBO in a tall can that switches up twice a year.
The SOBDL are proud to support the Canadian Women’s Foundation- with a portion of event profits, 100% of bar tips at events, a portion of can or bottle sales of collaboration brews and $1 from each pint at participating GOOD TAP draught locations all supporting the important work of the CWF.
