"...the Catholic school is particularly sensitive to the call from every part of the world for a more just society, and it tries to make its own contribution towards it. It does not stop at the courageous teaching of the demands of justice even in the face of local opposition, but tries to put these demands into practice in its own community in the daily life of the school. Last week, Fr. John Huber, CSB visited Institución Educativa Eusebio Septimio Mari in Riohacha, Colombia, which just opened in February. Fr. Huber visited the classrooms and gave a presentation on Catholic education to the faculty.

The campus operates as a high school for 680 students in Grades 7 through 11 in the morning. In the afternoon, it transforms into an elementary school, accommodating 865 younger students. A secondary campus, located about 20 minutes away is named Mother Veronica and serves 328 students up to Grade 9. Fr. Huber visited the classrooms and gave a conference to the teachers on Catholic education.

Four Basilians currently serve at the school. Fr. Carlos Arturo Rodríguez Marciales, CSB, is the Rector and teaches Religion to 400 students. Fr. Eduard Alexis Guerrero Carrillo, CSB, serves as the school’s Director, while Fr. José Adán Gómez Villalvazo, CSB, fulfills the role of Chaplain. Meanwhile, Fr. Erick de Jesús Enríquez Gutiérrez, CSB, assists both at the school and in nearby parishes.

EVERYONE at a Catholic school is an educator.

“The teacher under discussion here is not simply a professional person who systematically transmits a body of knowledge… ‘teacher’ is to be understood as ‘educator’ - one who helps to form human persons.”

"The Catholic school has as its specific duty the complete Christian formation of its pupils... Young people have to be taught to share their personal lives with God. They are to overcome their individualism and... to live responsibly in a community with others. The very pattern of the Christian life draws them to commit themselves to serve God in their brethren and to make the world a better place for man to live in."

"...the Catholic school shares this element [of dialogue] as constitutive of its identity. [...] Dialogue combines attention to one’s own identity with the understanding of others and respect for diversity. In this way, the Catholic school becomes 'an educating community in which the human person can express themselves and grow in his or her humanity, in a process of relational dialogue...'"

"Life's most persistent and urgent question is, 'What are you doing for others?'"

Today, we reflect on the wisdom and vision of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., whose dedication to justice, equality, and education continues to inspire us. Brotherhood and servant leadership are at the core of Catholic Central. Let's continue to uplift and serve one another.
