Canadian Society of Decorative Arts

Canadian Society of Decorative Arts A non-profit organization working to promote decorative arts and design in Canada The CSDA publishes Ornamentum twice a year.
(1)

The Canadian Society of Decorative Arts/Cercle Canadien des arts décoratifs was founded in 1980 with the generous support of the Macdonald Stewart Foundation. Governed by a president, vice-president, secretariat and council of members from each province, the CSDA/CCAD is a national non-profit organization whose revenues are generated through membership ad special development initiatives. The CSDA

provides opportunities for members to communicate with other individuals and organizations involved in the decorative arts and related fields. Through local and national events, including behind-the-scene visits, customised tours and private receptions, members have opportunities to learn, see important work and to meet other decorative arts enthusiasts. It is the only magazine devoted to exploring the large spectrum of decorative arts in Canada, highlighting creative design and craftsmanship in both historical and contemporary work. Written for a broad readership, Ornamentum appeals to a diverse range of engaged readers, including curators, librarians, gallery owners, art consultants, educators, collectors and the general public. "Repenser les arts décoratifs : le design au cœur du Musée des beaux-arts de Montréal" is now available to read on ornamentum.ca!

Bruno Andrus, PhD, is a Quebec-based studio glassblower, art historian and independent researcher. Andrus discusses the presence of The Sun / Le Soleil (2003), a monumental blown glass installation by Dale Chihuly that anchors the exhibition.

"Présentée au cœur de l’atrium et se déployant sur les deux niveaux d’exposition, l’œuvre — composée de plus de 1 200 éléments spiralés aux teintes jaunes et orangées — agit comme centre physique et métaphorique. Autrefois installée à l’extérieur du pavillon, elle rayonne désormais en permanence à l’intérieur."

CSDA/CCAD Members! Did you know that you have access to exclusive recordings through our member portal?

🎥 Paul McClure discussd his own studio practice and provided an overview of the renowned School of Jewellery at George Brown Polytechnic in Toronto, one of the oldest and largest programs of its kind in North America. As GBC, like many other craft programs in Ontario, faces the threat of closures and underfunding, McClure addressed this crisis and its impact on the sustainability of craft skills in Canada.

If you missed it at our 2025 symposium, you can watch the recording of Paul McClure: Designer - Maker - Educator on our website, at your own leisure.
