Canadian Friends of the Hebrew University of Jerusalem (CFHU), founded in 1944 by Canadian philanthropist Allan Bronfman, promotes awareness, leadership and financial support for The Hebrew University of Jerusalem. CFHU facilitates academic and research partnerships between Canada and Israel as well as establishing scholarships, supporting research, cultivating student and faculty exchanges and recruiting Canadian students to attend the Rothberg International School. CFHU has chapters in Montreal, Ottawa, Toronto, Winnipeg, Edmonton, Calgary and Vancouver. The Hebrew University of Jerusalem, founded in 1918 and opened in 1925, is Israel's leading university. Albert Einstein, Martin Buber, and Sigmund Freud, were among the university's founders, they were thinkers and visionaries whose genius inspired a university that would have no limits or borders. Ranked as one of the world's leading research universities (ranked 3rd in Asia and 70th globally), HU lies at the forefront of the international academic and scientific communities. Many top prizes and awards have been won by its graduates and faculty including eight Nobel Prizes, and the Fields Medal in Mathematics. The Hebrew University is a pluralistic institution where science and knowledge are advanced for the benefit of humankind in an atmosphere free of discrimination and prejudice.

How do young people find hope when the world feels dark?

Join CFHU’s Centennial Authors Spotlight Series on Wednesday, October 14 at 7 p.m. Hebrew U alumna Elana Shira Segal will discuss her debut novel, Even the Darkness as Stars, with fellow alumna Joanne Goldman.

Through the story of a funny, relatable 14-year-old, they’ll explore youth mental health, resilience, and finding a way forward. A conversation for parents, educators, teens, and everyone who cares about young people.

Dr. Galia Shalev receives the 2026 WSAVA - World Small Animal Veterinary Association Animal Welfare Award.

WSAVA is delighted to announce Dr. Galia Melman Shalev of Israel as the recipient of the 2026 WSAVA Companion Animal Welfare Award, recognizing her exceptional dedication to protecting companion animals and supporting their families during a period of crisis.

Following the events of October 7, 2023, Dr. Shalev returned to her community and quickly responded to the animal welfare emergency unfolding around her. Working alongside her husband and a network of volunteers, she helped rescue, identify, and care for animals left behind, injured, or separated from their owners, ultimately helping hundreds of pets and other animals.

She also provided veterinary care to the pets of evacuated families during three months in Eilat, including vaccinations, preventive treatments, and other essential care.

Dr. Shalev’s story is a powerful example of how veterinarians can make a difference in times of crisis, protecting animal welfare, supporting families, preserving the human–animal bond, and strengthening the communities they serve.

Researchers from The Hebrew University of Jerusalem have discovered a monumental 2,000-year-old public mikveh complex at the foot of the Temple Mount.

Built during the first century CE, the 280-square-meter facility was designed to serve the massive influx of Jewish pilgrims preparing to ascend to the Second Temple during major festivals like Sukkot.

The site features a sophisticated hydraulic drainage system and a ritual bath exceptionally preserved to its full height, with its original vaulted stone roof intact.

The five-season excavation at the Ophel was directed by Prof. U*i Leibner and Prof. Orit Peleg-Barkat from the university's Institute of Archaeology.

A shepherd’s search for a lost sheep. A hidden cave. A bishop. A secret purchase through a Wall Street Journal ad.

It sounds like the plot of a thriller, but it’s the true story of the Great Isaiah Scroll—one of the most extraordinary archaeological discoveries in history.
Written more than 2,100 years ago, this remarkable scroll survived for millennia in a cave near the Dead Sea before beginning an astonishing journey that eventually brought it home to Israel. For the first time in nearly 60 years, visitors can now stand just feet away from the original 24-foot-long handwritten scroll at the Israel Museum, where every stitch, correction, and faded letter offers a direct connection to the ancient world.

Some stories preserve history. This one became history.

🍅 What if tomatoes could thrive in colder weather?
Researchers at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem have uncovered a genetic mechanism that could help tomato plants produce fruit even when low temperatures would normally stop the growing process.

In winter greenhouse trials, the modified plants produced more fruit than conventional plants, dramatically pointing to a breakthrough that could strengthen food security, extend growing seasons, and help farmers adapt to changing climates.

It's another powerful example of how Israeli innovation is turning cutting-edge research into real-world solutions.

Held on our Mount Scopus campus, this five-month program combines intensive Hebrew studies with academic coursework, English instruction, personal guidance, and social activities, ensuring participants become familiar with Israeli culture and student life.
