BREAKING: Human Rights Defender Boniface Mwangi Arrested in Kenya

On July 19, 2025, renowned activist and photojournalist Boniface Mwangi was arrested at his home in Lukenya, Machakos County, by Kenyan security forces.

He now faces terrorism-related charges linked to the June 25, 2025 national protests.

🚨 During the arrest, police reportedly seized:
• Mobile phones
• Laptops & hard drives
• Tear gas canisters (unused)
• Blank ammunition
• Company materials from Brave Media & Courage Ltd

Despite the serious accusations, no explosives, inciting material, or weapons have been presented publicly. Boniface is now being held at Pangani Police Station and is expected to be arraigned on Monday, July 21.

3. Legal Support and Access to Justice
We offer legal assistance, including representation and document preparation, to victims of human rights abuses. Our work is grounded in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, the ICCPR, and the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights. We also provide public legal education to build legal awareness and civic agency.

It is deeply concerning and outright condemnable that the Ugandan police would resort to shooting and killing six unarmed individuals without justification. These were human lives—lives that should have been protected by the very institution responsible for ensuring public safety. This pattern of extrajudicial killings raises alarming questions about the integrity of Uganda’s justice system and the leadership of the Inspector General of Police .

If Uganda had serious and committed leaders in both opposition and government, there would undoubtedly be immediate calls for the IGP to resign or provide a transparent explanation of the actions of his officers. How could such a drastic decision to use lethal force be made against individuals who did not exchange bullets, threaten civilians, or resist arrest? What investigation, if any, preceded this violent act? These are questions that demand urgent answers.

This incident also leads us to question the leadership of President . Is Uganda reverting to the dark days of oppressive regimes, like that of Idi Amin, which Museveni has consistently condemned for their brutality? Or is this the implementation of a new draconian policy—one where the state takes justice into its own hands, especially now that bail and police bond have been restricted?

We call upon , , , , and other international human rights bodies to urgently intervene and investigate these grave violations. The Ugandan government must be held accountable for this atrocity and ensure justice for the victims.
