Today, February 23, we are proud to share that Mayor Olivia Chow and the City of Toronto have officially proclaimed Language Advocacy Day.

On behalf of the Association of Professional Language Interpreters (APLI), we extend our sincere gratitude for this meaningful recognition. This proclamation highlights the vital role that professional interpreters play in ensuring equitable access to services, justice, healthcare, education, and community life for linguistically diverse communities.

Language access is not a luxury — it is a right.
Today we celebrate advocacy, inclusion, and the power of communication to build stronger, more connected communities. 🌍

Thank you to the City of Toronto for acknowledging the essential work of language professionals and for supporting linguistic equity across our city.

Happy Language Advocacy Day!

Love is more than a feeling — it is connection.
And connection begins with understanding.

At the Association of Professional Language Interpreters (APLI), we celebrate the power of language to bring hearts closer, families stronger, and communities together.

This Valentine’s Day, we honor the interpreters who help love be heard in every language.
And on Family Day, we celebrate the voices that make us feel at home — no matter where we come from.

Because when we understand one another, we create space for empathy, unity, and belonging.

Happy Valentine’s Day & Happy Family Day 🤍

✨ Celebrating the 10th anniversary of OCCI was a wonderful opportunity to come together, connect, and grow as a community.

A heartfelt thank you to all the interpreters and colleagues who participated in this event. 🚀 Interpreting Fast Reading Skills — Read Faster, Interpret Smarter

In interpreting, every second matters. Improving your fast reading skills means faster comprehension, better accuracy, and smoother delivery. Here are a few professional tips to level up:

📌 1. Train Your Eye for Key Words
Interpreters don’t need every single word — focus on nouns, verbs, numbers, and names to capture meaning quickly.

📌 2. Practice Silent Pre-Reading
Before interpreting written content, scan the text silently to identify structure, topic, and potential challenges.

📌 3. Use Chunking Techniques
Read in meaningful chunks (phrases or concepts) rather than single words to speed up semantic processing.

📌 4. Build Terminology Familiarity
The more terminology you already know, the less time you spend decoding. Create themed glossaries and review them regularly.

📌 5. Scan for Context First, Details Later
In interpreting, context is everything. Understand the general point first, then look for technical or critical details.

💡 Want to learn more practical strategies and improve your interpreting fast-reading skills?
