Canadian International Council - Toronto Branch Volunteer-run Toronto chapter of the Canadian International Council providing meeting places for an open dialogue on foreign affairs

The mandate of the Canadian International Council (CIC) is to promote a deeper understanding of international affairs and of Canada’s role in a changing world by providing members with a non-partisan, nation-wide forum for informed discussion, analysis and debate. By bringing together all interested parties – private sector, government, academia, NGO representatives, as well as the concerned publi

c – to examine global issues through a distinctively Canadian lens, the CIC contributes a unique perspective on Canada’s place in the world. We hold approximately 15 to 20 foreign affairs events during our programming year of September to June – in addition to our annual Winter and Summer strictly social gatherings. Our events range from single speaker keynote to expert panel events. All our events include a question and answer period and reception – providing an opportunity for those attending to ask speakers questions and network. The CIC’s digital media platform, OpenCanada.org, is Canada’s hub for international affairs, linking our stakeholders in Canada and beyond.

On February 11, CIC Toronto Branch hosted Canada’s Strategic Diversification: Getting from Europe to Eurasia and the Gulf States—The UAE, Trade, AI, and Pragmatic Diplomacy with Arif Lalani, former Canadian Ambassador to the United Arab Emirates.

Melanie Walker, Executive Director of CIC, delivered opening remarks, and the discussion was moderated by Mustafa A***n, President of the CIC Toronto Branch.

The conversation underscored how Canada’s strategic diversification beyond Europe—toward Eurasia and the Gulf states—is both a practical necessity and a strategic opportunity. The discussion explored the UAE’s role as a global connector, the expanding potential for trade, investment, and AI collaboration, and the challenge of balancing pragmatic diplomacy with Canada’s values.

The discussion also highlighted the importance of sustained engagement and relationship-building, while underscoring the opportunities and strategic choices Canada faces in navigating today’s uncertain and evolving geopolitical environment.
