Sheryl Lee Ralph is continuing to use her platform with purpose.

While speaking with Variety at ’s recent AIDS Foundation Academy Awards viewing party, the actress and longtime advocate opened up about her decades-long fight against HIV/AIDS. Sheryl, who served as a producer on the 2023 documentary Unexpected, which highlights Black women living with HIV, stressed the urgency of the issue. “It’s not a dead issue in America right now,” she said. “It is spreading. We are still seeing upticks across the south, especially in women of color, and it is something that needs to be paid attention to.”

She also emphasized the importance of awareness around prevention, encouraging more women to consider PrEP, a medication that prevents HIV-negative individuals from contracting the virus. “As we spread awareness, so many women have no idea that PrEP is also for them. It’s not just for men,” she added. In a previous interview with PEOPLE, Sheryl echoed similar concerns, noting, “In 40 years, I have seen this narrative around this disease go from what they wanted to call a ‘gay white man’s disease’ to a ‘Black woman’s disease,’ especially the Black woman in the south of the United States. It has become the burden of this group of women to continue to do the work of raising awareness.”

Happy Birthday Casey House Toronto!!

March 1st, 2026 is Casey House’s 38th birthday! 🎂🎉

Thank you to all our staff, volunteers, peers, clients, donors, supporters, and friends for seeing us through to 38 years of judgement-free essential health care. It is an honour to serve people living with and at risk of HIV. In 1988, HIV was considered to be a death sentence. We could not have transitioned from hospice to hospital without the resilience of community. Casey House was founded by a group of volunteers, led by June Callwood, after witnessing the undignified treatment of people with HIV. Today, we apply the same passion when caring for people who have been systemically excluded from receiving care. Love has always been integral to our operation. You all inspire us to extend our hearts and push toward a more equitable future. Thank you for another year of support!

Today, HIV-specific exposure and transmission laws still exist, and more than half of states impose enhanced criminal penalties based solely on HIV status, driven by stigma rather than science. Someone you love may still be paying the price.

HIV Is Not a Crime Awareness Day was first recognized on February 28, 2021 by the Sero Project and the Elizabeth Taylor AIDS Foundation. Observed between Black History Month and Women’s History Month, the date acts as a bridge between both communities, which are most affected by HIV and criminalization.
