Stress affects more than how you feel — it can trigger real physical changes throughout the body. During an acute stress response, blood flow can increase by as much as 400% as the body prepares to meet increased demands.

Living with Alpha-1 can affect more than your physical health. Alphas, family members, and caregivers may all need someone to talk to at times.

Support can take different forms: a conversation with someone you trust, a group where you can connect with other Alphas, or help from a mental health professional. If you’re considering counselling, ask your healthcare team for a referral and look for someone you feel safe with.

Where does the alpha-1 antitrypsin (AAT) used in augmentation therapy come from? Donated human plasma.

AAT is collected and purified from plasma to make augmentation therapy. For eligible Alphas with lung disease, this treatment helps raise AAT levels and protect the lungs from further damage.

During International Plasma Awareness Week, we honour the donors who help make this treatment possible. Thank you, plasma donors.

Living with Alpha-1 can bring stressful days for Alphas and the people who care about them. The Big Fat Reference Guide (BFRG) reminds us that coping strategies are tools - and a tool that helps in one situation may not help in another.

Take a moment to notice what’s working for you. Be specific when you ask for support. If one approach isn’t helping, it’s okay to try something different.

September 30 marks National Day for Truth and Reconciliation.

Today, we honour the Survivors of residential schools, the children who never returned home, and their families and communities. We recognize the lasting impacts of the residential school system and the importance of continuing to listen, learn and reflect.

AlphaNet Canada joins people across the country in observing this day.

One helpful technique for differentiating an infection from medication side effects is to have your infusion provider infuse saline through the device instead of augmentation therapy. If the same symptoms occur, this strongly suggests an infection. Always consult your healthcare provider before changing your augmentation therapy routine.

Living organ donation happens when someone donates a kidney or part of their liver to a person who needs a transplant. For some people with serious liver disease, including members of the Alpha-1 community, it may offer another path to transplantation.

This week, we honour living donors, recipients, families and the healthcare teams supporting them.

Most exacerbations are caused by viruses such as influenza, rhinovirus, or adenovirus. Unfortunately, only a few viruses have a specific therapy that can make a difference in outcome. Therefore, healthcare providers test for influenza and COVID-19 because there are medications available that make a difference for these.
