Canadian Civil Liberties Association at York University The Canadian Civil Liberties Association at YorkU (CCLA YU) is a campus chapter of CCLA.

The Canadian Civil Liberties Association (CCLA) is a national organization that was constituted to promote respect for and observance of fundamental human rights and civil liberties, and to defend, extend, and foster recognition of these rights and liberties. Since 1964, CCLA has defended fundamental human rights and civil liberties of Canadians through public education, litigation, citizen's enga

gement, and monitoring and research. The goals of CCLA YU include fostering respect and recognition of fundamental human rights and civil liberties, and educating and advocating these rights and liberties to York University students and the larger community. Through various debates, discussions, events, and public initiatives, we aim for York University students and the larger community to take on a leadership role and become more active in respecting and promoting human rights. To be a part of CCLA YU, contact us at [email protected] and make sure to come out to CCLA YU events in September!

The CCLA is very disappointed that the Toronto police board has passed their carding policy without the “progressive” citizen safeguards suggested a year ago. Says our Equality Director, Noa Mendelsohn Aviv, the original policy “would have set a gold standard,” noting that even though it basically required police to simply comply with existing laws that there was nothing like it in Canada. “It wasn’t perfect, but it was something we could work with.”

Toronto police board's revised carding policy is missing many of the citizen protections in an earlier version

The CCLA intervened in R v Nur and its companion case R v Charles to argue that the three-year and five-year mandatory minimum sentences for possession of restricted and prohibited fi****ms with ammunition constitutes cruel and unusual punishment in reasonable hypothetical cases. Section 12 of the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms protects against cruel and unusual punishment. Today, the majority of the Supreme Court agreed with CCLA’s position and struck down the provisions as being unconstitutional. Read more here: http://ccla.org/2015/04/14/scc-ruling-nur/

"The morning after 17-year-old Natanael failed to return home from a night out, his grandmother Marina was faced with her worst nighthmare: standing at the morgue, she saw Natanael’s body, riddled with bullet wounds, his neck and arm broken. Sadly, this shocking story is not unusual in Brazil, where at least six people are killed by police officers every single day." -Amnesty International

As the world prepares to mark the International Day against Police Brutality on 15 March, fear and outrage boil over in a community in north-eastern Brazil after police recently killed 12 men.
