🇺🇦 Happy Independence Day, Ukraine!

Today, on Ukraine’s Independence Day, we celebrate what unites us — our culture, history, identity, and the strength of a people who continue to stand together.

We were honoured to represent Crimean Tatar culture and share our heritage with the community. Our booth became a space for meaningful conversations, new connections, and discovering the history and traditions of the Crimean Tatar people — an integral part of Ukraine’s past and present.

A sincere thank you to Ukrainian Canadian Congress for bringing everyone together and creating a space where Ukrainian culture, diversity, and community could be celebrated.

Crimea was, is, and will always be Ukraine.

Over the past two days, Russian security forces have launched a new wave of illegal raids targeting the homes of Crimean Tatars across Northern Crimea. In addition, reports have emerged of searches and detentions at a mosque on Crimea’s Southern Coast.
The scale and full details of these detentions are still being clarified, but the message from Refat Chubarov, Head of the Mejlis of the Crimean Tatar National People, is clear and urgent: Do not stay silent.

“While you remain silent about the lawlessness committed against you and your loved ones, you remain dangerously vulnerable. The Russian occupiers in Crimea are afraid of publicity regarding their crimes. Do not stay silent. Document. Report.” — Refat Chubarov

Today, on the International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples, we join the global community in honoring Indigenous peoples worldwide — recognizing their cultures, languages, traditions, histories, and enduring connections to their ancestral lands.

Crimean Tatars are the Indigenous People of Crimea. Our identity, culture, language, and heritage are deeply rooted in the Crimean Peninsula, preserved and passed down through generations despite forced displacement, systemic persecution, and centuries-long efforts to suppress our existence.

Today, under the ongoing temporary occupation of Crimea, Crimean Tatars continue to face severe human rights violations as they defend their identity, preserve their language and culture, and assert their rights as an Indigenous nation in their historic homeland.

On this day, we reaffirm our solidarity with Indigenous peoples across the globe who continue to protect their ancestral lands, safeguard their cultural identities, and uphold their fundamental human rights.

The European Court of Human Rights has ruled that Russia’s seizure of Ukrainian citizens’ land plots in occupied Crimea was unlawful. People whose land was taken away by Russian “courts” remain the legal owners of the property, Ukraine’s Ministry of Justice reported.

The case, Bazhenov and Others v. Russia and Ukraine, concerned land plots on Crimea’s Southern Coast. In 2009–2010, Ukrainian authorities in Sevastopol transferred the plots to citizens for the construction of summer homes. The owners completed all the necessary paperwork, and some later bought or sold the plots.

After occupying Crimea, Russia began cancelling Ukrainian land documents. Between 2015 and 2017, Russian “courts” claimed that the plots were allegedly part of the forest fund and could not be privately owned. The land was seized in favor of the Russian state, while the owners received no compensation.

The ECHR ruled that Russia had violated the people’s right to peaceful enjoyment of their possessions and their right to a fair trial. According to Ukraine’s Ministry of Justice, Russian laws cannot lawfully apply in occupied Crimea, and the “courts” established by Russia in the occupied territory are not legitimate. Therefore, their decisions terminating ownership rights have no legal force.

The European Court also reiterated that international law prohibits the confiscation of private property in occupied territories. This means that owners retain their rights to their land plots, even if Russian “courts” have ruled to seize them.

“The scale of the issue is thousands of victims. According to the UN, the list of ‘nationalized’ property in Crimea contained more than 4,600 real estate properties as of 2017 alone. According to estimates by the Crimea Platform, at least 3,800 land plots were confiscated between 2014 and 2017,” Ukraine’s Ministry of Justice said.

“We carefully studied the legislation and made a joint decision to cease the activities of our civic movement,” the Crimean Solidarity movement said in a statement published on Facebook. From now on, the organization’s website and social media pages will no longer be updated. This is the movement’s first and, at the same time, final public statement since Russian authorities decided to add it to the register of so-called “foreign agents.”

On June 26, 2026, Russia’s Ministry of Justice added the Crimean Solidarity movement to the register of so-called “foreign agents.” In its statement, the Crimean Tatar organization called the decision political pressure and an attempt to isolate and discredit an independent civic initiative that supported victims of persecution in occupied Crimea.

This year, Crimean Solidarity marked its 10th anniversary. According to the movement’s leaders, over the past decade they have documented the stories of persecuted people, supported the families of detainees and prisoners, helped organize legal defense, and shared information about events in Crimea that often did not reach the official information space.

The statement emphasizes that Crimean Solidarity was not created as a political organization, but as a mutual-aid initiative for Crimean Tatars and members of other communities who faced Russian repression. Human rights defenders, journalists, volunteers, and people from various professions joined the movement. Some of them, the organization notes, were themselves subjected to fines, administrative arrests, and criminal prosecution, while some participants and their colleagues remain in places of detention.

Representatives of the movement said that the status imposed by the Russian authorities does not change their values. However, under the current circumstances, they do not see an opportunity to continue operating in the same format. They described the decision to cease operations as extremely difficult, noting that over 10 years the initiative had grown into a community built on mutual support, trust, and responsibility.

Last night was something special Thank you Kazka Entertainment for inviting us and organizing such a beautiful evening, thank you Svoi v Old School for opening your doors and hosting us so warmly, and a huge thank you to Nastasia Y (Настя Єрофеєва) and her band for an incredible concert!

We’re grateful to everyone who came together to make this happen. Moments like these are what keep our culture alive and moving forward.

Big thank you to Nastasia Y (Настя Єрофеєва) for such a beautiful performance last night at “SVOI v Old School”! Everyone in the room felt it - your voice, your energy, just… wow. And when you sang “Salgir River” in Crimean Tatar, it really hit different. A lot of us got emotional hearing our language on stage like that.

✨ Get ready for a special evening of music!

On July 5 Toronto will host the opening night of Nastasia Y’s first Canadian festival tour — an evening where Ukrainian musical traditions meet a modern sound.

🌿 Summer vibes. An intimate setting. An updated lineup of musicians.

Nastasia Y creates a unique musical world by blending ancient Ukrainian folk songs with jazz, funk, and electronic elements. She calls this sound “Ukrainian Soul” — music that carries our history, culture, and the spirit of modern Ukraine.

You’ll have the chance to hear Nastasia Y’s updated program and discover a new sound. Her album Kyiv Soul, created in collaboration with Grammy Award-winning artist Justin Gray, received high praise from CBC and World Music Charts Europe and was nominated for two Canadian Folk Music Awards.

At the end of the concert you’ll have a chance to participate in the auction in support of the Canadian Association of Crimean Tatars.
