Older people and carers have an essential role in shaping the future of care.

The IFA is pleased to support World Health Organization in sharing a call for members of a Technical Working Group that will contribute to the development of the WHO Global Standards for Quality of Care for Older People.

Applications from older people (60+) and unpaid carers are particularly encouraged, as their lived experience is essential to informing more person-centred, integrated, and dignified care.

๐Ÿ“… Applications close 22 June 2026 (23:59 UTC+2).

We encourage interested individuals to consider applying and invite our network to share this opportunity widely.

Building climate-resilient communities means designing systems that enable people to live longer, healthier lives. ๐ŸŒฑ

Today, the IFA hosted Part 3 of its Global Cafรฉ Investment Series: Investing in Planetary Health and Climate Resilience for Longevity. Several powerful insights emerged from the discussion.

Mr. N. Charles Hamilton shared local context, stories, and policy lessons from Bahamas, highlighting that the links between climate change, health, and ageing are increasingly recognised at the policy level. The challenge now is mobilising funding, building capacity, and translating evidence into action - particularly as funding constraints intensify globally.

Prof. Carlos Dora shared a compelling vision for the future of climate resilience and healthy ageing. Climate change will continue to present new challenges, but success will depend on equipping people with the tools and opportunities to drive local transformation. Building resilience across sectors and advancing the rights of older persons - including through a UN Convention on the Rights of Older Persons - will be critical.

Thank you to the speakers and the IFA for a thoughtful and timely conversation. We look forward to advancing this important area of work alongside Health System Impact Fellow Tara Chen, whose work with the IFA is helping to strengthen the connection between climate resilience, healthy ageing, and longevity within policy and health system discussions.

Vision health is essential to healthy ageing, independence, and quality of life โ€” yet many people still face barriers to timely, coordinated, and person-centred care.

The IFAโ€™s Vision Health in Focus video series explores the growing impact of retinal diseases such as age-related macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, and diabetic macular edema, while highlighting opportunities to strengthen care systems and improve outcomes for patients and caregivers.

Through conversations with leading clinicians, researchers, and vision health experts, the series examines:

๐Ÿ”น The importance of early intervention and rehabilitation
๐Ÿ”น The lived experiences of patients navigating care systems
๐Ÿ”น Barriers to access, diagnosis, and treatment
๐Ÿ”น Opportunities to advance more equitable and integrated vision care

Featuring insights from Dr. Walter Wittich, University of Montreal, Dr. David Wong, St. Michaelโ€™s Hospital, and Dr. Larissa Moniz, Fighting Blindness Canada.

African older persons' rights advocates, human rights commissioners, and ambassadors will centre the leadership and lived realities of older Africans, sharing perspectives on:
โžก๏ธ How to turn human rights principles into accountable systems
โžก๏ธ How to bring together sub-national and national governments, civil society, women, youth, the private sector, and development partners to drive action
โžก๏ธ How Member States can use the ratified African Union Protocol on the Rights of Older Persons and the Madrid International Plan of Action on Ageing (MIPAA) review process as tools for meaningful change

๐ŸŒ From The Gambia, Rwanda, Cameroon, Malawi, and Kenya to the Indian Ocean region, we will explore how engagement mechanisms are working across Africa and what lessons can be shared.

OHCHR will also provide an update on the proposed UN Convention on the Rights of Older Persons, the mandate of the UN Intergovernmental Working Group on Ageing, and why participation from all stakeholders matters.

This conversation is about practical action and commitments. Join us and be part of the dialogue.

The IFA is pleased to welcome a new student fellow through the 2026 Health System Impact Fellowship cohort, announced by the CIHR and partners.

This yearโ€™s cohort includes 42 fellows from across Canada ๐Ÿ‡จ๐Ÿ‡ฆ โ€” 24 postdoctoral researchers and 18 PhD trainees โ€” working to strengthen health systems through embedded, impact-focused research. Fellows will contribute to advancing solutions in areas such as primary care, mental health, digital health, integrated care, and health workforce transformation.

We are excited to welcome Tara Chen, who will support advancing the IFAโ€™s pillar of work on and , exploring opportunities to integrate ageing and hashtag perspectives within climate discourse and policy.

Climate change is increasingly shaping the conditions in which people age, while environmental factors such as air quality, climate stability, ecosystems, food systems, and urban design are fundamental determinants of healthy longevity. Through this work, the IFA connects healthy longevity with planetary health and climate action, supporting the development of sustainable and resilient societies that enable longer, healthier lives for all generations.

We are excited to support the next generation of health system leaders and look forward to the contributions this fellowship will make to advancing healthy ageing and longevity-ready societies. ๐ŸŒŽ

As populations age, the intersection of ageing and is becoming one of the defining challenges of our time โ€” yet policy responses have not kept pace.

At , the International Federation on Ageing (IFA), together with supporting non-State actors, called on WHO and Member States to ensure that implementation of the Political Declaration on NCDs reflects the realities of global population ageing.

Building on these discussions, IFAโ€™s new report โ€” Elevating Older Persons and Healthy Ageing in the Global NCD Agenda โ€” calls for a fundamental shift: placing healthy ageing at the centre of the global NCD response.

The report highlights key priorities for action, including:
๐Ÿ”น Embedding ageing within NCD policy, governance, and health system design
๐Ÿ”น Strengthening prevention across the life course, including vaccination, screening, and early intervention
๐Ÿ”น Building workforce capacity through geriatric competencies and multidisciplinary models of care
๐Ÿ”น Improving health literacy and access to age-appropriate information
๐Ÿ”น Advancing cross-sector collaboration across health, long-term care, social systems, and broader determinants of health

As global leaders shape the future of NCD policy, healthy ageing must no longer remain at the margins of the conversation.

Longer lives are reshaping societies, economies, and communities across every region of the world. ๐ŸŒ

No government, organisation, or sector can respond to this transition alone. Progress depends on collaboration grounded in evidence, lived experience, and shared responsibility.

This is the role of the International Federation on Ageing (IFA).

We connect people, policy, and partnerships across borders and sectors to help ensure that longevity is matched by dignity, choice, and opportunity.

Because building longevity-ready societies is not the work of one sector โ€” it is a shared responsibility. The time to act is now!

What does it take to build a longevity-ready society? โœจ

It requires rethinking how societies value , design policy, share knowledge, and work together across generations and sectors.

As part of the launch of IFAโ€™s 2026โ€“2029 Strategy, we will be focusing on four interconnected areas of impact that will guide our work over the coming years: changing mindsets, mobilising knowledge, empowering partners, and reforming policy.

is reshaping every society. The opportunity now is to ensure longer lives are accompanied by health, participation, dignity and connection.

We canโ€™t do this alone. Join our global network and help build societies that are ready for longer, healthier and more meaningful lives. ๐Ÿ’™
