Member Monday: Janet Read

Inspired by water, light, and the shifting atmosphere of the natural world, Janet Read creates expressive abstract paintings that explore colour, movement, and our connection to the landscape.

Growing up near Lake Simcoe sparked a lifelong fascination with the water’s edge. Travels and residencies across Newfoundland, Ireland, the High Arctic, Norway, Iceland, and Scotland have deepened her exploration of water as a metaphor for both strength and fragility. A painter, poet, musician, and educator, Janet brings these disciplines together in a practice shaped by observation, memory, and metaphor.

Janet’s work has been exhibited in public and commercial galleries across Ontario and can be found in public, private, and international collections. Her poetry collection, Blue Mind’s Flower, was shortlisted for the Gerald Lampert Award.

Member Monday: Deniz Ergun Seker

Inspired by memory, renewal, and the stories held within everyday objects, Deniz Ergun Seker creates whimsical textile sculptures that transform forgotten materials into poetic three-dimensional narratives.

After a 15-year career as an agricultural engineer, Deniz devoted herself to sustainable textile art, blending careful observation with imaginative storytelling. Working with aged textiles, lace, found objects, and reclaimed materials, she gives each piece new life through rich textures, intricate layering, and playful compositions that have become her unmistakable signature.

A dedicated member of the Women’s Art Association of Canada since 2009, Deniz has also served seven years on the Board, helping to shape WAAC’s exhibitions and events while continuing to exhibit her work throughout Toronto and internationally.

WAAC has recently announced the opening of a new project: an Open Call for a Contemporary Indigenous Art Exhibition. This is an open call for all Indigenous artists of Canada to showcase their work in a juried exhibition celebrating contemporary Indigenous art and voices.

Submissions are free to enter and open exclusively to Indigenous artists. This exhibition invites artists to share works that reflect the spirit of "All My Relatives."

✨ Member Monday: Christine Lynett ✨

Inspired by nature, place, and a lifelong dedication to the arts, Christine Lynett creates expressive works that bridge drawing, painting, and printmaking with sensitivity and depth.

From her early studies at the Ontario College of Art to a transformative year in Florence, Italy, Christine has built a career spanning art education, museum programming, and international exhibitions. Working in pencil, charcoal, watercolour, oils, lithography, and aquatint, her practice reflects decades of artistic exploration shaped by experiences across Canada, California, Cuba, and Italy.

Now based in her restored studio and gallery in the Tuscan countryside, Christine continues to create while fostering artistic collaboration and cultural exchange in the place that first inspired her creative journey.
