We are excited to be joined by the National Ballet of Canada who will be bringing the joy of ballet to the West Neighbourhood House community.

Led by Annemarie Cabri, Senior Teaching Artist with The National Ballet of Canada, these gentle classes are designed for older adults of all abilities.

• Improve balance, coordination and confidence
• Connect with others through creativity and movement
• Learn the basics of ballet in a supportive environment
• Explore classical choreography and stories from the stage.

Join your neighbours in Parkdale tomorrow evening to share a meal, learn about the municipal election, and discuss your top election issues. Today we recognise the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation in Canada. We reflect on the enduring harm caused by residential schools and honour the memory of children who never returned home, the survivors of residential schools, and their families and communities.

Last night, we were grateful to be joined by so many community members for our drum circle with Rosalind Rundle and her family, and documentary screening of 'Nahanni: River of Forgiveness' by local filmmaker Geoff Bowie, followed by a Q&A with Geoff.

The evening was a beautiful and thought-provoking display of traditions, languages, cultures that are sustained by Indigenous communities, and a reminder of the ongoing resilience of Indigenous peoples.

Thank you to Rosalind, Geoff, and everybody else who contributed.

We're excited to be hosting Put It On a Poster on October 3rd, 1 to 3 p.m., 248 Ossington Ave, together with Green Wave West.

This free drop-in event is open to everyone, but focused on new voters!

Come out and make some art, get voter basics, check if you're on the voters list, and talk about what matters to you.

Do you have access to a car and are available on Wednesday mornings?

We are in need of Volunteer Drivers for our Meals on Wheels program, especially on Wednesdays (but other days welcomed too!)

The Meals on Wheels Program offers healthy, affordable meals to seniors and people living with disabilities in the downtown West-end community, to support them living independently.

We rely on our Volunteer Runners and Drivers, who deliver 10am-1pm 6 days a week, year-round.

West Neighbourhood House has recently lost several hard-working, excellent staff who had to leave Canada because of new changes to immigration and work permit rules.

Changes to federal laws, regulations, and practices have thrown the lives of many people into chaos and uncertainty. Our Immigrant and Refugee Services frontline staff see people who paid immigration fees, have successfully gone through many hours of paperwork step by step for their work permit or permanent residency, and have integrated into and contribute to the communities they live in, now facing new rules midway through the process.

This Sunday, September 20th at 2pm, there will be a demonstration of support for immigrants and refugees taking place in Christie Pits Park (750 Bloor Street West) followed by a march over to Dufferin Grove Park.

We hosted a Community Open House to connect with neighbours about the planned redevelopment of our 248 Ossington site. It was fantastic to meet community members who care deeply about our neighbourhood, and to hear many stories about how we can build a community space that can continue to connect and benefit so many.

We were joined by SHS Consulting and LGA Architectural Partners to provide an update on their work supporting us at this early stage of the planning process.

We hosted our fourth and final volunteer group from BMO as part of BMO's Days of Impact! The volunteers supported our Newcomer Youth Program in their back-to-school drive, by donating and assembling bags of school supplies and handwritten notes, followed by participating in an afternoon of fun activities with the youth.

Our Newcomer Youth Program at the House supports and empowers youth who are new to Canada. Volunteers like BMO provide an important opportunity to create connection, community and belonging, and to prepare our youth for a successful start to the school year. Thank you, BMO!
