Canada’s oceans are full of life—from corals and turtles to whales and wild fish. But many of these species are endangered. A 2020 report found over 2,000 animal species in Canada are at risk of extinction.

The first North Atlantic right whale entanglement of 2025 has been confirmed in Canadian waters. The whale was seen on May 27 in the Saguenay–St. Lawrence Marine Park.
Oceana Canada is calling on Fisheries and Oceans Canada (DFO) to require ropeless gear in high-risk areas to help prevent more of these heartbreaking incidents.
This critically endangered species cannot afford more losses.

A pair of critically endangered Mediterranean Monk Seals, caught in a tender moment of play. The Mediterranean monk seal (Monachus monachus), is the sole member of the genus Monachus, and one of two surviving species of monk seals on the planet. With an estimated 30 individuals remaining within the remote North Atlantic islands of Madeira and Las Desertas, I’ve been working on a meaningful project to shine a light on these beautiful marine mammals and the committed caretakers of this special population. 10 October 2024 – UNESCO’s Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (UNESCO-IOC), the EurOcean Foundation, and Portugal are pleased to announce the launch of the 2nd edition of the Mário Ruivo Memorial Lecture Series, inviting Early Career Ocean Professionals (ECOPs) to showcase their groundbreaking projects.

This initiative celebrates the legacy of Professor Mário Ruivo, former Executive Secretary of UNESCO-IOC and one of Portugal’s most influential champions of ocean science and sustainability.

UNESCO-IOC, the EurOcean Foundation, and Portugal invite Early Career Ocean Professionals (ECOPs) to showcase their groundbreaking projects.
