Because of his legacy, Lincoln Alexander is a positive role model for young people, especially Black & racialized youth. When young people identify positive role models, they show higher levels of self-esteem and stronger academics.

It is for his trailblazing accomplishments, among so many more, that we intend to create a tribute, with lasting educational value and artistic purpose that the entire community can enjoy, to be on display at Queen’s Park. With support from the Alexander family, and with your donations, we can see this project reaching completion.

Lincoln Alexander’s political career highlights a very important chapter in Canadian political history and as such, the Province of Ontario recognize his contributions to Ontario by approving and allowing a of to be placed in the North side grounds of in Toronto.

At L2L, we are aiming to commemorate one of our first patrons, who believed in the power of service and leadership.

Alongside fighting for racial equity for Black Canadians, Lincoln M. Alexander was a patron and advocate for the Licensed to Learn program since 2002. With the support of Lincoln M. Alexander, Licensed to Learn (L2L) has been able to support over 40,000 young people across Canada. At Licensed to Learn, we continue to provide barrier-free access to academic support, leadership training, and opportunities for community engagement across Canada.

On this date, September 20, 1968, Lincoln Alexander gave his first speech in the House of Commons as the first Black Canadian elected as a Member of Parliament in Canada. On this date, September 20, 1985, Lincoln Alexander was sworn in as Ontario’s 24th Lieutenant Governor. This appointment made him the first Black Canadian to serve as a vice-regal in Canada.

To further recognize Lincoln Alexander’s exemplary legacy of service and leadership, we are asking all of you to support our effort to install a commemorative bust in his likeness, to be housed at Queen’s Park in Toronto, alongside other Canadians who’ve made lasting contributions to our shared community.

At L2L, we want to make sure our students and teachers feel confident and empowered as they join our Licensed To Learn program.

One of our teachers said, "As an educator, I gave it a lot of thought, and I chose the L2L organization because of its vision and its mission statement. And I am glad I did!"

She continued to express how she strongly believes that L2L does not only provide an education to students but a sense of hope as well, "Not only do I feel that I am helping build capacity among our young people to lead, but I also feel that I am directly or indirectly providing hope for the neediest students in our schools. And isn’t it hope that helps us define what we want in our future lives?"

- Anna Enenajor, Teacher.

Today is Lincoln Alexander Day. We celebrate the Honourable Lincoln M. Alexander, Canada’s first Black Member of Parliament, first Black federal Cabinet Minister, and Ontario’s first Black Lieutenant Governor. Today would have been his 100th birthday.

Alongside fighting for racial equity for Black Canadians, Alexander was the patron and advocate for the Licensed to Learn Program since 2002. We are grateful for his support.

At Licensed to Learn, we continue to honor his legacy by providing barrier-free access to academic supports, leadership training, and opportunities for community engagement across Canada.

One of our tutors said, "At first, I didn't know if I would actually make a difference with my student. I never saw myself as a tutor and usually am shy. At the end of the summer, I realized how much fun I had."

She continued to express how she put herself in her peer's shoes in order to have a better tutoring experience.

"Even though I am going to university and leaving high school, I still want to volunteer as a tutor next year."

The trainers that train the trainers are the key factor to the success of our program. Mary Frances Leon talks about her experience with the L2L program:

"I have been so fortunate to partake in L2L learning as a trainer. This initiative inspires me as I am soon to become a teacher myself, and I think there is such importance in empowering youth to support their peers. I am excited to see how this program continues to grow!"

You can help empower a student, just as Mary has been, for just $30. Donate now at https://www.l2l.ca/donate
