Caribbean carnival has its roots in African cultural traditions which were often used as a form of resistance against colonial oppression.

After the abolition of chattel slavery, these traditions of music and masquerade became a celebration of resilience, freedom and pride in one’s African heritage.

Having blended with various European influences over the years, Carnival has taken on many forms unique to each Caribbean island, and today remains one of the most vibrant cultural events in the Caribbean.
