Sheena's Place We offer hope & support to individuals, families & friends affected by eating disorders

At Sheena’s Place we offer hope and support to individuals, families and friends affected by eating disorders by providing a wide range of professionally facilitated support groups and services. We are committed to inspiring hope, reducing stigma, raising awareness and offering meaningful help and information at all stages of recovery. Located in downtown Toronto, Sheena’s Place is a noninstituti

onal, nonresidential centre where people with similar issues and concerns come together in groups to share experiences, thoughts, feelings, and coping strategies. We offer groups for young adults, adults, mothers, men, and women over forty, as well as groups for families, friends and partners of those with eating disorders. We recommend individuals attend an introductory information interview with us to enable them to choose the support group best suited to their needs. Although we are a registered charity, we do not receive funding from the government and we are not a United Way Member Agency. We rely on revenue from special events and the generosity and financial support of individuals, foundations and corporations.

The truth is that eating disorders don't have a look. Weight and appearance are not reliable indicators of struggle, severity, or recovery. This World Eating Disorders Action Day, we're challenging the stigma that keeps people unseen and unsupported. Meaningful care begins when we stop relying on appearance and start listening to people's experiences.

Stop Stigma, Start Care.

Image Description: Two boxes outlined in dark purple on a background of a light purple gradient. The top box has a red x in the top left corner, and under the bold title ""Myth"" reads ""You can tell from someone’s appearance whether they have an eating disorder. "" The second box has a green checkmark in the top left corner, and under the bold title ""Fact"" reads ""Many people with eating disorders look healthy, yet may be extremely ill."" In the top right corner, purple text reads ""World Eating Disorders Action Day"" with ""action"" in white to highlight the need for action. At the bottom, white footer with the hashtags .

The belief that someone has to be “sick enough” to deserve help is one of the most damaging myths surrounding eating disorders. Denial and minimization are often part of the illness itself, making it even harder for people to recognize when they need support.

This World Eating Disorders Action Day, we’re sharing stories that challenge the idea of waiting until things get worse. Care is not something you earn - it’s something you deserve. Reaching out early, even when doubt or denial are present, is an act of strength.

Eating disorder recovery is not a one-size-fits all journey. What works for one person may not work for another - and meaningful care recognizes those differences. People need support that reflects their unique experiences, identities, bodies, and needs.

This World Eating Disorders Action Day, we're sharing stories that highlight the importance of flexible, individualized care. When treatment adapts to the person - not the other way around - recovery becomes more accessible, compassionate, and effective.

Start Care Together.

Being weight-restored doesn’t mean the thoughts and behaviours of an eating disorder simply disappear. Many people continue to struggle internally even after their bodies appear “restored” - a reminder that eating disorders are complex mental health conditions, and are not defined by weight.

This World Eating Disorders Action Day, we’re sharing stories that challenge the myth that recovery can be measured from the outside. Meaningful care recognizes the whole person - their thoughts, emotions, and lived experience - regardless of weight💜

Tuesday tip of the day 🌱

Begin where you are.

Not where you think you should be. Not where you were before.

World Eating Disorders Action Day is a global awareness movement held every year on June 2. Founded in 2014 by individuals with lived experience and families, the day now brings organizations, communities, clinicians, researchers, and advocates from more than 50 countries to push for real change.

The goal is simple and urgent: to challenge harmful myths, break stigma, share evidence-based information, and advocate for stronger, more coherent systems of care.

Each year, communities across the world host events, webinars, campaigns, and conversations to amplify awareness and expand access to help.
