Please join us this Sunday May 3!

Quatuor Magenta

"Quatuor Magenta was born and raised in Paris, France, but the musical identity of our string quartet is a collage of the different cultures, educations, preferences and passions of its four members. This eclectic program captures that kaleidoscopic identity in music: works by Polish composer Grażyna Bacewicz and Canadian composer Dinuk Wijeratne reflecting the multicultural roots of our members; a chef d’oeuvreby F***y Mendelssohn, one of the first female composers to enter the standard classical cannon, whose music we are especially proud to share; and our first commission, a piece by Raphaël Merlin, brilliant composer, founding cellist of the Quatuor Ébène and one of our most important musical mentors."

Special guest Maxime Alberti, piano

Welcome back pianist Maxime Alberti!

Last year, the Syrinx audience was introduced to French pianist Maxime Alberti.
His performance on our stage was sensational and we are thrilled to have him back as a guest pianist with the Quartuor Magenta.

Originally from Lyon, Maxime Alberti continued his musical training at the Geneva University of Music in the class of Sylviane Deferne, where he earned a Master's degree in solo performance with distinction. He then joined the École Normale Alfred Cortot in Paris to study with Rena Shereshevskaïa, and in 2020 received the unanimously awarded Diploma of Concert Performer. In 2022, he returned to Geneva to further develop his pedagogical approach with Cédric Pescia, obtaining a second Master's degree dedicated to teaching.

Curious, eclectic, and deeply committed to his artistic exploration, Maxime Alberti enriches his practice through encounters and travel. He has honed his skills under renowned pianists such as Dominique Merlet and Anne Quéffelec, and has received support from the Royaumont and Villecroze Foundations. His sensitivity, attentiveness, and spontaneity are fully expressed on stage, whether in solo recitals or chamber music. His career is rapidly gaining international recognition: he gave his first recital in the United States in the "Pink Room" of the French Consulate in New York, won the Vera-Lautard Competition in Yekaterinburg, Russia, and performed in China in 2024 as part of a tour with the Trio Ernest, in prestigious venues such as the Guotai Art Center in Chongqing and the Oriental Art Center in Shanghai.

A generous pianist, open to repertoires as well as collaborations, Maxime Alberti is building a career at the crossroads of classical excellence and creative freedom.

Introducing the violist Claire Pass- Lanneau and the cellist Fiona Robson from the Quatuor Magenta.

CLAIRE PASS-LANNEAU
Viola
When her hands are not covered in paint, Claire Pass-Lanneau transposes her interest for colours and textures to music, the art to which she dedicated herself after growing up in Paris. Awarded the first prize and contemporary prize at the 2017 Concours National des Jeunes Altistes, Claire completed her Master's degree at the Conservatoire de Paris, under the guidance of renowned violists such as Sabine Toutain, Christophe Gaugué, David Gaillard, Lise Berthaud and Adrien la Marca. At the same time, she obtained a bachelor degree in chamber music (string quintet).
Passionate about ensemble playing even before joining the Quatuor Magenta in 2021, she was involved in the development of an nonprofit orchestra called Ensemble Orchestral Clair de Lune since its first edition in 2018, which she was invited to join as a soloist. Currently first chair of the Orchestre des Lauréats du Conservatoire, she was a member of the Verbier Festival Orchestra 2020 and she regularly plays in renowned French orchestras.

As a chamber musician, she loves exploring different configurations and all kinds of repertoire at festivals such as Présences Radio France and les Belles Musiques de Claix. Her string quartet journey with the Quatuor Magenta allows her to perform at renowned concert venues such as the Biennale des Quatuors à Cordes at the Philharmonie de Paris or the Festival de la Chaise-Dieu, and to collaborate with wonderful artists including the Modigliani Quartet, Pierre Fouchenneret, Romain Descharmes and Theo Fouchenneret.

FIONA ROBSON
Cello
Canadian cellist Fiona Robson completed her Master’s degree in cello performance at the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique de Paris in 2022, in the class of Marc Coppey and Pauline Bartissol . Previously she studied with Matt Haimovitz at McGill University, and performed in Haimovitz’s Grammy-nominated cello ensemble Uc***lo in Canada, the US and Germany. Fiona was born in London, Ontario, where she studied cello with Julia MacGregor, and has since performed as a soloist with the London Youth Orchestra, London Community Orchestra, and London Concert Band.
Particularly enamoured with string quartet playing, she was a founding member of the Lafontaine String Quartet, with whom she won the 2018 McGill University chamber music competition and was a semi-finalist of the 2019 Fischoff National Chamber Music Competition. In 2021, Fiona and pianist Elsa Bonnet formed Duo Névé, and were soon invited to the prestigious Concours International de Musique de Chambre de Lyon in April 2022.

Excited by the exploration of contemporary music, Fiona commissioned an original piano reduction for Philip Glass’ Cello Concerto No. 1 in 2018, which she performed for the composer at Scotia Festival of Music. In 2023, Fiona commissioned a new piece for cello and piano from Canadian composer Chris Goddard. The result, Murch Studies, is an evocative four-movement suite inspired by the work of Chris’s great uncle, Canadian painter Walter Tandy Murch, and was premiered with pianist Raymond Truong in Toronto in March 2024. This performance was part of a five-stop recital tour that was generously sponsored by the Canadian Council for the Arts.

On Sunday May 3, at 3pm, Syrinx welcomes Quatuor Magenta. Introducing the violinists Ida Derbesse & Elena Watson-Perry.

IDA DERBESSE
1st violin

Immersed in a musical environment from a very young age, Ida Derbesse grew up in a family of musicians. Early on, she developed a deep affinity for string quartet, an ensemble that is now the center of her artistic commitment. She has passionately explored this repertoire since her teenage years, guided and inspired by her mentors including Sergey Ostrovsky, himself a renowned quartet player.

At the same time, she regularly performs as a soloist, with the Orchestre Colonne and the ensemble Via Luce, and she is a laureate of several competitions, including the SSPM Competition in Switzerland and the Johannes Brahms Wettbewerb in Austria. Her chamber music activities have led her to perform at prestigious festivals and venues such as Wigmore Hall in London, La Roque d’Anthéron International Piano Festival, the Gaïa Festival and the Schubertiades of Thônex in Switzerland, as well as Muzyczna Korzkiew in Poland. Invited as concertmaster and assistant principal with various orchestras in France and abroad, Ida has participated in numerous symphonic projects and tours, especially since her involvement in the New Academy of the Orchestre de Paris in 2019.

ELENA WATSON--PERRY

2nd violin
Born into a family of musicians, Elena set her sights on a musical career from a very young age. She studied at the Paris Conservatoire with Stéphanie-Marie Degand, where she also founded the quatuor Vigrid, gaining her first concert experience. Before joining the Magenta Quartet, Elena spent two years refining her skills at the Cleveland Institute of Music. There, she took part in several intensive programs focused on sonata, piano trio, and string quartet. She received guidance from members of the Emerson and Dover Quartets and participated in numerous projects.

Her strong interest in contemporary music led her to explore this repertoire, collaborate on new works, and become acquainted with a wide range of musical languages. Since 2025, she has also performed in a sonata duo with pianist Paul Baert, with whom she presents thematic and eclectic concert programs.

Presenting the Quatuor Magenta!

Ida Derbesse - violin
Elena Watson-Perry - violin
Claire Pass-Lanneau - viola
Fiona Robson - cello

“A model of technical discipline, elegance and musical excellence” (La Croix, transl.), Quatuor Magenta is a string quartet based in Paris, where its members met at the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique. With their diverse nationalities and paths through prestigious musical institutions in Canada, the US, the UK and Switzerland, these four musicians have combined into an ensemble praised for its “remarkable balance, flexibility and spontaneity” (Diapason, transl.).

In addition to such world-renowned stages as the Philharmonie de Paris, Festival de RadioFrance Montpellier, and the Banff Centre, Quatuor Magenta brings their generous sound and contagious musical energy to less traditional settings, from prisons to elementary schools to pre-concert chats. Introducing the string quartet repertoire to an ever-expanding and more diverse audience is one of their most important goals.

While rooted in the tradition of the string quartet, Quatuor Magenta has a particular passion for modern and contemporary music. In 2024 they participated in the Kronos Quartet’s “50 for the Future” marathon at the Philharmonie de Paris’ Quartet Biennial, and at the 2026 Biennial they premiered their first commission, La Jeune Fille, by Raphaël Merlin, which has since been released on all streaming platforms. They are committed to regularly programming music by women composers and continuously explore creative ways to combine familiar masterpieces with lesser-known repertoire, enlivening their concert programs with these unexpected pairings.

Though based in Europe, Quatuor Magenta is also making a name for itself in Canada, home country of its cellist. In spring 2026 they will return for their second Canadian tour, which includes performances in London (ON), Toronto, Montreal, and Halifax.

Quatuor Magenta is junior artist-in-residence at the Singer-Polignac Foundation and grand résident at Proquartet - Centre Européen de Musique de Chambre. In 2025 they participated in the Bordeaux and Banff International String Quartet Competitions, earning the Anderson Career Development Award in Banff. They received prizes at the 2023 FNAPEC competition (Académie des Beaux-Arts scholarship) and the 2022 Zukunftsklang Competition Stuttgart (3rd prize), and were finalists of the 8th Joseph Haydn Chamber Music Competition in Vienna. Their mentors include the Ébène, Modigliani and Artemis Quartets, as well as Rainer Schmidt of the Hagen Quartet.

The Quatuor Magenta plays on the “Quatuor de Vougeot”, four instruments by German luthier Stefan Peter Greiner, graciously loaned by the instrumental bank “Musique et vin au Clos Vougeot”.
