How is artificial intelligence reshaping clinical practice and the relationships between clinicians, patients, and technology?

Join us on August 27 (12–1 PM PT) for AI in Clinical Practice: Reshaping Workflows and Relationships, a virtual seminar hosted by the Women's Health Research Institute (WHRI) and the BC Children's Hospital Research Institute (BCCHR).

This session features Dr. Alexis Fabricius, whose research examines the ethical, social, and philosophical implications of digital technologies, artificial intelligence, and data-intensive practices across healthcare, clinical care, and research.

Drawing on emerging evidence related to AI scribes and AI-enabled clinical decision support systems, Dr. Fabricius will explore how these technologies are reshaping clinical workflows and human–technology relationships. Participants will gain practical and theoretical approaches to critically evaluating AI in healthcare, with particular attention to trust, privacy, accountability, and governance.

By the end of this session, participants will be able to:

-Explain how AI technologies are reshaping clinical practice and relationships among clinicians, patients, and AI.

-Apply practical and theoretical frameworks to critically evaluate AI technologies in healthcare.

The NEO Kids Children's Treatment Centre's Assistive Communication Clinic supports children and families across a vast region of Northeastern Ontario, providing specialized augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) services. Their large catchment area brings unique challenges, which is why accessibility and family-centred care are at the heart of everything they do.

Their team has built strong collaborative relationships with Speech-Language Pathologists, school boards, and service providers throughout Northeastern Ontario. These partnerships allow them to offer both virtual and in-person services, helping families access specialized support closer to home while reducing travel whenever possible.

Being family-centred means meeting families where they are in their communication journey. From caregiver education and resources available in both English and French to specialized AAC assessments and intervention services, NEO Kids partners with families to build communication skills and provide the knowledge, tools, and support needed to help children communicate with confidence.

They are also proud to provide Tier 1 AAC education and professional development opportunities to school boards and community partners across their catchment area, helping build local capacity and support children in the environments where they learn, play, and connect every day.

Together, NEO Kids and their partners are helping more children find their voice through innovative, collaborative, and family-centred care.
