Canadian Jesuits International

Canadian Jesuits International Canadian Jesuits International (CJI), was founded by the Jesuits of Canada. We carry out educational advocacy in Canada, linked with our overseas work.

CJI is the international solidarity agency of the Jesuits of Canada that supports poor and marginalized people in Africa, Asia and Latin America in their struggle for a more just society through the work of Jesuits and other partners. We proclaim the Good News of justice and peace within the universal mission of the Society of Jesus. We support poor and marginalized peoples struggling for social j

ustice and dignity in the Global South. We presently work with Jesuit and other partners rooted in the Jesuit tradition in Asia, Africa, Latin America and the Caribbean in the following areas: education and health; sustainable agriculture and livelihood support; human rights defence and community organizing; and forcibly displaced people and humanitarian action. Our educational advocacy draws upon an extensive network of Jesuit and other partners around the world to raise Canadians' awareness of the struggles and aspirations of people in the Global South.

We at Canadian Jesuits International (CJI) would like to express our deepest sadness at the passing of Carl Hétu, Executive Director of Development and Peace - Caritas Canada (DPCC).
“I worked with Carl at Development and Peace in the early '90s and over the years we had the opportunity to collaborate as colleagues in our new roles and to renew our friendship. We lamented the current state of the world together; we were accomplices in working for change, and dreamed of justice and peace,” said CJI Executive Director Jenny Cafiso. “His passion and compassion were contagious. His faith, unwavering. His hope, deep. His friendship, faithful and long lasting. His humour, life giving.”
CJI expresses its condolences to his family and to Development and Peace. “Carl – may your spirit always be with us,” said Cafiso.
Hétu died on Wednesday, May 27, 2026, according to an announcement by DPCC: https://bit.ly/3S6VJyo

The Outreach Program at Canadian Jesuits International has grown steadily over the past years through strong relationships with Catholic and Jesuit schools across Canada. These collaborations have not only strengthened our shared mission of service, but also empowered young Canadians to become leaders whose values are rooted in faith and justice. As we look to the future, CJI is taking steps to consolidate the Youth for Others Network, creating a vibrant community space dedicated to the formation, connection, and inspiration of Canadian youth. https://bit.ly/4nISOYN

Thank you to the teachers and students at Cathedral High School in Hamilton, Ont, for giving Fr Ismael Matambura, SJ, a warm welcome.

Fr. Matambura even made a cameo appearance on Cathedral High School TV!

Fr. Matambura is a Jesuit priest from the Democratic Republic of the Congo and the Director of the African Jesuit AIDS Network (AJAN) (AJAN), a CJI partner. He is visiting Toronto to raise awareness of AJAN’s mission to prevent HIV infections, support people living with HIV, and empower women and vulnerable groups by providing education, livelihood projects and psychosocial support.

Fr. Matambura described the challenges of responding to the HIV/AIDS epidemic in Africa. He said that AJAN takes various approaches to raise awareness, including promoting youth leadership and running peer-to-peer information campaigns to prevent HIV infection, drug abuse, and violence among young people.
AJAN also provides vulnerable people with income and hope through livelihood programmes. One such program is Building Resilience in Women and Girls in Africa, which is supported by CJI. This program provides vulnerable women and girls, particularly those living with HIV, with training in financial literacy and business management, as well as start-up funding for a small business.

"God has been very good to us. My husband and I agreed that when we retired, we would spend our money helping those in need. Some people think 'It’s my money. I worked hard for it.' But all blessings come from God." - Joanna Terpstra, a long-time supporter of Canadian Jesuits International (CJI) on why she supports CJI and the work of Jesuits.
