With Canada recently upgrading its relationship with Viet Nam and the President of Viet Nam coming to Ottawa to sign a joint statement with Prime Minister Carney, we are reminded about Canada's shameful involvement in the U.S. war agianst Viet Nam as documented in Clare Culhane's 1972 book "What is Canada doing in Vietnam"? Clare did a ten-day hunger strike outside of Parliament in the winter to call on Canada to stop supporting U.S. aggression with weapons and Agent Orange. She was a VOW member and spoke across the country in the 1970s speaking out against the war and calling for peace. Canadian author, John Boyko, wrote about Culhane in his latest book "The Devil’s Trick: How Canada Fought the Vietnam War" and you can read an excerpt here: https://johnboyko.com/2021/03/22/the-one-woman-army/ *Canada never paid Viet Nam reparations or apologized to the Vietnamese people.

Our member Tamara attended the high-level reception and policy discussion with the Vietnamese President and Communist Party General Secretary Tô Lâm on Parliament Hill on Sept. 24. There were approximately 250 invited guests to hear the President of Viet Nam speak. It was the first time that a President of Viet Nam came to Canada. Minister of Foreign Affairs Anita Anand introduced President Lâm and talked about Canada-Viet Nam relations. Then, the President gave a speech in Vietnamese and translated text is here: https://en.baochinhphu.vn/full-policy-speech-by-general-secretary-president-to-lam-at-canadian-parliament-111260925160935414.htm The Vietnamese President emphasized the importance of peace and international cooperation. Before the large audience, he said “Viet Nam's history is a journey of nation-building and national defense, struggles for independence and reunification, healing the wounds of war, and pursuing Renovation and opening up to the world. We understand deeply the sacred value of independence, self-reliance, and resilience. We understand and cherish peace, uphold dialogue, and believe that trust is durable only when words are matched by deeds, commitments are implemented seriously, and cooperation is mutually beneficial.” Tamara also met the Ambassador of Thailand and the Ambassador of Vietnam.

We appreciated the High Commission of South Africa welcoming us to their beautiful building in Ottawa and to have a discussion about Canada's Africa Strategy, Palestine, peace, the role of middle powers, and BRICS. We thanked South Africa for standing up for Palestine and initiating the case against Israel for genocide at the International Court of Justice. 🇿🇦

Lyn and the other activists with Seniors Climate Witness getting arrested on Parliament Hill. The Carney government needs to act on climate, reduce emissions and upscale renewable energy and implement a just transition to a green, care economy!

VOW member Lyn Adamson bravely participated in the recent Seniors Climate Witness action blocking the road in rocking chairs to protest the Carney government's decision to invest in pipelines instead of climate action. Lyn and the other seniors were arrested. Tamara stood in solidarity with the banners "Stop fueling wildfires, no new pipelines" and "Militarism fuels the climate crisis".
