Established in 1960, Canadian Voice of Women for Peace (VOW) is a non-partisan Non-Governmental Organization (NGO) comprised of a network of diverse women with consultative status at the United Nations ECOSOC. For over 50 years, VOW has provided a means for women to exercise responsibility for the promotion of world peace and justice, through education of themselves and others to take an equal par

WEBINAR: The Environmental Cost of War: Accounting for Conflict's Hidden Emissions, Thursday 4 June, 12:00 - 13:30 ET
Toronto Climate Week. Register: https://luma.com/warandcarbon
Military activity and its vast supply chains are estimated to account for approximately 5.5% of global peacetime greenhouse gas emissions, yet this significant carbon footprint remains largely excluded from climate frameworks and reporting standards — both in Canada and internationally.
Join us for a live webinar during Toronto Climate Week in partnership with the University of Toronto's MSc in Sustainability Management program.
Together, we'll examine how military emissions are excluded from global accounting, what that means for Canada's climate commitments, and what it would take to change it.
Featured Speakers: Ali Borhani
Following his TEDx Talk, selected as an Editor's Pick, Ali Borhani FRSA explores how the significant carbon footprint of global conflict has remained absent from climate policy. Ali makes the case for bringing military emissions into the global climate conversation and why we need a GC3P (Global Conflict Carbon Compass and Pricing) to finally measure, disclose, and mitigate this overlooked source of climate impact.
Speaker: Tamara Lorincz
Tamara Lorincz is one of Canada's leading voices on military emissions as an academic and activist who has spent over 20 years making the case that defence spending has a carbon cost that no one is counting.
About the Host:
This event is organized by Randa Ali and Rija Ansari, Toronto climate professionals and University of Toronto Alumni. Part of Toronto Climate Week: https://www.tocw.ca/

As militarization pushes itself into almost every corner of our lives, as weapons become more powerful, as military bases across the world become nuclear armed, we know this is not about defense. This is about imperialism hand in hand with capitalism. It is about land grabs, resource extraction, pollution and climate change. It is about turning our communities into targets and deforming the future of our children.
Many brave women across the world have stood firm to defy this onslaught of aggression. We bring you the voices of meaningful protest from some of those standing in the front line of defiance.

Join the free online webinar for Toronto Climate Week 2026 titled The Environmental Cost of War: Accounting for Conflict’s Hidden Emissions, taking place Thursday, June 4, 12:00 to 1:30 PM EST.

The event is in partnership with the graduate program, the Master of Science in Sustainability Management (MScSM) at the University of Toronto.

The event examines a pressing issue that is overlooked in climate conversations: military activity and its vast supply chains are estimated to account for approximately 5.5% of global peacetime greenhouse gas emissions, yet this significant carbon footprint remains largely excluded from climate frameworks and reporting standards, both in Canada and internationally. This is particularly relevant to Canada right now, as defence spending and Arctic militarization are expanding under the current government, with real climate implications that have received little policy attention.
